Payment Route
Hungary to United States Payment Methods
A Hungary-to-US payment should start with the route the US merchant or verified recipient actually offers. Practical ecommerce routes usually include a Hungary-issued Visa or Mastercard, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay backed by an eligible card, or a regulated international transfer. qvik is a Hungarian instant-transfer merchant-payment solution and should be treated as a US merchant route only when the merchant or its payment provider explicitly exposes a compatible qvik payment request, QR, link or NFC flow. AFR is the underlying domestic HUF instant-payment system. SEPA can provide a separate EUR funding leg where a regulated provider supplies a compatible European account. This guide separates those layers before comparing authorization, HUF/USD conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

For a US Merchant, Start With Card, PayPal, Wallet, or a Verified Transfer
If the US merchant shows Visa or Mastercard, inspect the exact Hungary-issued card and issuer. If PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay is shown, inspect the account or underlying card. Use qvik only when the merchant or PSP explicitly offers a compatible route. Use AFR only where a regulated provider explicitly supplies a Hungarian HUF collection account, and use SEPA only where the provider supplies a compatible EUR collection account before onward USD delivery.
Route Read
Which Hungary-to-US Route Fits the Payment Job?
| Route | Route Read | Best Job | What Still Decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hungary-issued Visa / Mastercard | First Check | US ecommerce, software, travel and subscriptions | The US merchant must accept the network and exact card. The Hungarian issuer controls funds or credit, online/international use, merchant category, billing profile, authentication, recurring authorization, limits, risk, USD authorization, HUF posting and refunds. |
| PayPal | Merchant Checkout Layer | US merchants explicitly offering PayPal | The merchant must expose PayPal. Then the Hungary PayPal account, funding source, account status, automatic-payment agreement, currency conversion, payment state and refund destination must fit current terms. |
| Apple Pay / Google Pay | Wallet Handoff | US web, app or physical checkout supporting the wallet | Check the exact supported Hungarian card, merchant integration, device/browser, issuer, USD billing, recurring support and final authorization. |
| qvik | Explicit Integration Only | A US merchant or PSP explicitly exposing qvik | Verify the live qvik QR, NFC, payment-link or payment-request route, Hungarian mobile-banking compatibility, amount/currency handling, customer approval and final AFR transaction state. A Hungarian user having qvik access does not make every US website qvik-enabled. |
| Regulated transfer | Alternative | Invoices, businesses and verified US recipients | Verify the licensed provider, legal recipient, HUF or EUR funding, USD delivery, identity requirements, live rate and fees, account details, timing, transaction state, reconciliation and recovery. |
| AFR HUF funding leg | Explicit Provider Account Only | A regulated provider that supplies Hungarian HUF collection details | AFR is a domestic instant HUF rail. Verify the provider, account or eligible secondary identifier, HUF amount, whether the payment qualifies for instant processing, reference, final funding state and separate USD delivery. |
| SEPA EUR funding leg | European Funding Layer | A regulated provider that supplies a compatible EUR collection account | Verify EUR funding/conversion, provider/recipient IBAN, scheme participation, transaction state and the separate EUR→USD delivery. Do not infer SEPA Instant support from domestic AFR availability. |
qvik vs US Checkout
qvik Is Widely Available to Hungarian Bank Customers, but US Merchant Acceptance Is Separate
Merchant Must Expose qvik
MNB’s qvik framework makes the payer side broadly available through Hungarian mobile banking. A US merchant still needs a qvik-compatible payment-provider integration before the route becomes usable at checkout.
Payment Stays an Instant Transfer
qvik uses AFR underneath. Preserve the merchant request, payer approval, bank fraud controls and final instant-transfer state rather than treating the merchant order alone as proof of payment.
QR, NFC and Link Are Initiation Methods
These qvik modes change how the bank-transfer request reaches the payer’s mobile-banking app. They do not turn qvik into an international card network.
Funding Layers
AFR and SEPA Can Fund a Provider, but Neither Is a Universal US Checkout
AFR can move eligible HUF payments within seconds when a provider supplies compatible Hungarian account details. SEPA can move EUR when a provider supplies a compatible European account. In both cases, the cross-border provider must separately establish the US recipient and USD-delivery leg.
| Funding Route | Hungary Read | US Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| AFR instant HUF | Domestic HUF instant transfer, generally under the MNB instant-payment conditions | Possible HUF funding leg to an explicit provider account; separate USD delivery remains required. |
| Secondary identifier | Phone/email/tax identifier can identify an eligible Hungarian recipient when registered | Useful only if the regulated provider or recipient explicitly supplies/uses a compatible registered identifier. |
| SEPA EUR | European euro account transfer through participating PSPs | Possible EUR funding leg; the provider must separately convert or deliver USD. |
HUF/USD Money Trail
Follow the Amount From US Price to Hungarian Posting
Start with the US merchant’s original USD price. If checkout, PayPal or a regulated provider offers HUF, identify who performs conversion and the displayed rate or markup. Otherwise record the USD card authorization and final HUF posting. If an EUR funding leg is used, preserve any HUF→EUR conversion separately from the provider’s EUR→USD delivery. A later refund can convert back at a different effective rate.
Card Conversion
Record the USD authorization, final HUF posting and any separately disclosed issuer charges. If the merchant offers HUF, compare the live HUF quote with paying in USD.
Provider Conversion
For regulated transfers, preserve the HUF or EUR funding amount, live USD recipient quote, disclosed fees and expected delivery before authorizing.
Refund Conversion
A USD refund may return through the original card or PayPal route and post in HUF at a different effective amount. Preserve the original and refund dates and currencies.
Subscriptions
Recurring US Billing Adds a Stored-Credential Gate
A successful first purchase does not guarantee renewal. Record the US merchant of record, USD price, Hungary-issued card or PayPal agreement, authentication used at signup, recurring permission, expiry/replacement-card handling, issuer risk controls, cancellation date and refund policy. qvik or a one-time AFR transfer should not be assumed to replace a merchant recurring credential unless the merchant explicitly offers a separate compatible recurring bank-payment product.
Where the Route Breaks
Find the Failed Gate Before Retrying
Card Authorization Gate
Record issuer message, USD amount, international controls, merchant category, authentication and recurring setup.
Authentication Gate
Separate authentication from final issuer or bank approval.
Cross-Border Gate
Compare Hungary and US countries, exact qvik/AFR/card/SEPA route, currency, merchant/provider integration and risk controls.
Money Trail Gate
Reconcile the USD merchant price, HUF or EUR conversion choice, authorization, final posting, separate charges and refund.
Payment State Gate
Check whether the first qvik, bank, card, PayPal, wallet or transfer attempt is successful, rejected, pending, reversed, returned or refunded before paying again.
PayPal Layer
Use the PayPal guide when the US merchant does not offer PayPal, the Hungary account cannot continue, funding is unavailable or currency changes the route.
Straight Answers
Questions About Hungary → US Payments
Can qvik pay any US website?
No. A US merchant or its payment provider must explicitly expose a compatible qvik route.
Can AFR send HUF directly to a US merchant?
Not as a normal ecommerce checkout. AFR is a Hungarian HUF instant-payment rail. It can fund a compatible regulated provider when the provider supplies Hungarian account details, but USD delivery remains a separate route.
Can a phone number be used for the funding transfer?
Potentially, if the recipient/provider has registered an eligible secondary identifier with its Hungarian payment provider and the instant-transfer route supports it.
Can SEPA help with a Hungary-to-US transfer?
Yes as an EUR funding leg when a regulated provider supplies a compatible European account and separately handles USD delivery.
What should I preserve for HUF/USD conversion?
Keep the original USD price, any HUF or EUR quote, who converted the money, authorization/funding amount, final HUF posting, disclosed fees and any later refund conversion.
