Hungary Payment Guide

Hungary combines a nationwide instant-forint account-transfer system with qvik merchant payments, international cards, PayPal and card-based wallets. qvik is built on Hungary’s Azonnali Fizetési Rendszer (AFR), the instant-payment system launched by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank in 2020. qvik adds merchant-facing QR code, NFC, payment-link and payment-request flows to the underlying instant transfer. AFR also supports secondary account identifiers such as a registered phone number or email address for eligible transfers. Hungary is inside the SEPA geographical scope even though its national currency is HUF, so euro transfers form a separate account-payment layer. This guide separates those layers before comparing foreign merchants, HUF/USD conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

qvik, AFR, SEPA and Card Payments Are Different Hungarian Routes

Start by identifying the live payment door. qvik is a customer-facing merchant payment solution inside Hungarian mobile-banking apps and uses instant transfers underneath. AFR is the broader HUF instant-transfer infrastructure. Secondary identifiers can replace an account number in eligible instant transfers when the recipient has registered one. SEPA standard or instant euro routes are separate from domestic HUF AFR. Cards, PayPal and wallets follow merchant acceptance and issuer rules. A Hungarian domestic method should not be assumed to work at a foreign merchant unless that merchant or payment provider explicitly supports the route.

Which Hungarian Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?

The merchant interface, instant-transfer system, recipient identifier and card network are separate questions. qvik starts an instant transfer from the payer’s bank app. AFR settles eligible HUF instant payments. A phone number, email address or tax identifier can be used as a secondary identifier where registered. Cards, PayPal and wallets follow separate merchant and issuer paths.

Payment MethodCommon UseWhat Actually Controls It
qvikMerchant checkout through QR, NFC, payment link or payment requestThe merchant or payment provider must expose a qvik-compatible route. The payer initiates or approves the payment in a Hungarian mobile-banking app. qvik runs on AFR, so bank-app availability, merchant integration, HUF amount, approval and final instant-transfer state control the route.
AFR instant HUF transferEligible electronic one-off forint bank transfersMNB states that eligible electronically initiated HUF transfers below HUF 20 million complete within five seconds, 24/7. The payer and recipient payment providers, account or registered secondary identifier, amount, fraud controls and final state still decide the specific transfer.
Secondary account identifierInstant transfer using phone number, email address or tax identifier instead of account numberThe recipient must register the identifier with the bank/payment provider. The MNB infrastructure rules require providers to support registration/cancellation of secondary identifiers and prevent rejection merely because an eligible secondary identifier is used. Current technical use is tied to instant clearing.
SEPA Credit TransferEUR account transfers through participating institutionsHungary is inside SEPA although HUF is the national currency. The payer may need an EUR account or conversion. The payment provider, recipient IBAN, EUR amount, scheme participation, timing and reconciliation determine the route.
SEPA Instant Credit TransferInstant EUR account transfer where the Hungarian provider participatesSEPA Instant participation is provider-specific in a non-euro country. Verify the actual bank/PSP, recipient reachability, EUR funding, amount, verification controls and final state rather than assuming domestic AFR implies euro instant support.
Visa / Mastercard and other eligible cardsDomestic and foreign ecommerce, travel and subscriptionsThe merchant, exact Hungary-issued card, network acceptance, issuer, funds or credit, online/international controls, billing profile, currency, authentication, recurring support, risk checks and final authorization.
Apple PaySupported in-store, app and web card checkoutApple supports participating Hungarian banks and issuers. The exact card, merchant integration, device/browser, currency, recurring support and final issuer authorization remain separate checks.
Google Wallet / Google PaySupported contactless, app and web card paymentGoogle publishes a Hungary-specific supported-bank and card list. The exact bank/card, merchant integration, device, currency, recurring support and issuer authorization remain decisive.
PayPalOnline checkout and supported automatic paymentsThe merchant must expose PayPal. The Hungary PayPal account, account status, selected funding source, automatic-payment agreement, currency conversion, payment state and refund destination then control the route.
Regulated international transferForeign invoices, businesses and verified recipientsThe licensed provider, verified recipient, HUF or EUR funding, destination currency, live rate and fees, identity checks, recipient account, timing, transaction state, cancellation/recall and refund or return process.

qvik

qvik Turns the Hungarian Mobile-Banking App Into a Merchant Payment Door

The MNB describes qvik as a transfer-based electronic payment solution built on AFR. It covers QR-code, NFC, deeplink and payment-request flows. MNB also states that domestic mobile-banking applications are qvik-compatible under Hungarian requirements, so consumers do not need to open a separate wallet account. Merchant support remains a separate gate: the business or payment provider must actually expose qvik.

QR / Deeplink

A merchant can present a qvik QR code or payment link that hands the payment request into the customer’s banking app. The bank app and merchant integration must both be compatible.

NFC

qvik can also use an NFC-based initiation flow. Treat it as a bank-transfer payment initiation rather than a card-network tap unless the live merchant flow explicitly says otherwise.

Payment Request

A qvik payment request can prompt the customer to approve an instant transfer. The merchant request, payer approval, bank fraud controls and final AFR state should all be preserved when diagnosing a problem.

Instant HUF

AFR Is a 24/7 Five-Second Domestic Transfer Rail

MNB’s qvik guidance says electronically initiated forint transfers under HUF 20 million are processed every day around the clock and complete within five seconds under the instant-payment rules. The infrastructure also supports registered secondary identifiers. This speed does not make every merchant or international recipient reachable: the customer still needs a compatible bank or merchant route.

AFR GateWhat It Means
CurrencyThe domestic instant-payment obligation is centered on eligible HUF transfers. Euro and other currencies follow separate routes.
AmountMNB currently describes the mandatory instant range as electronic HUF transfers below HUF 20 million. Specific providers may apply customer risk or channel controls.
Availability24 hours a day, every day of the year for eligible instant payments.
Recipient identificationA registered phone number, email address or tax identifier can be used in eligible instant transfers instead of the account number.

Cards and Wallets

Cards and Device Wallets Remain Separate Merchant Routes

A qvik-compatible bank account and a payment card are not the same route. International card acceptance depends on the merchant network and exact card. Apple Pay and Google Wallet pass supported card credentials into a merchant or terminal flow, while PayPal adds a separate account and funding layer.

Visa / Mastercard

International card networks are practical for Hungarian domestic and cross-border merchant payments where the merchant and exact card are compatible.

Apple Pay / Google Wallet

Both have current Hungarian bank/card support. Wallet eligibility and merchant support must be checked separately from the issuer’s final authorization decision.

PayPal

PayPal provides a separate merchant checkout and account layer. Funding source, account status, automatic-payment agreement, FX route, transaction state and refund destination remain separate checks.

What Changes When the Merchant or Recipient Is Abroad?

A foreign merchant or verified recipient defines the entry point. qvik and AFR are powerful Hungarian account-payment routes but do not create a normal foreign ecommerce checkout on their own. A euro-area invoice can use SEPA through an eligible provider. For a US or other non-HUF/non-EUR merchant, cards, PayPal, wallets or a regulated international transfer become the main practical routes. Merchant country, destination currency, authentication, recurring billing, payment state and refund destination then become part of the corridor.

Hungary → United States

Start With the US Checkout and Trace HUF to USD

For a normal US ecommerce purchase, start with the payment methods the US merchant actually shows. A Hungary-issued international card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay backed by an eligible card, or a regulated transfer can form a practical route. Native qvik should be treated as available only where the US merchant or payment provider explicitly exposes a compatible integration. AFR can be useful as a HUF funding leg when a regulated provider supplies a Hungarian account, while SEPA can form an EUR funding leg where the provider supplies a compatible European account.

US Checkout First

Record the live card, PayPal, wallet or account methods at the US merchant rather than inferring a route from what is popular in Hungary.

qvik Needs Explicit Merchant Support

qvik is widely available to Hungarian bank customers, but the merchant must still expose a qvik-compatible payment request, QR, link or NFC flow. If it is absent, use another offered route.

HUF/USD Money Trail

Freeze the merchant’s USD price. If checkout or a provider offers HUF, identify who converts and the displayed rate or markup; otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final HUF posting and any later refund.

Straight Answers

Which Hungarian Payment Layer Controls the Answer?

What is qvik?

qvik is Hungary’s transfer-based electronic payment solution built on AFR. It includes QR, NFC, deeplink and payment-request flows initiated from compatible Hungarian mobile-banking apps.

Do I need a separate qvik app?

MNB says qvik is available through domestic mobile-banking applications, so a separate qvik consumer account or app is not normally required. The bank app still needs to be current and the merchant must expose qvik.

How fast are eligible instant HUF transfers?

MNB describes eligible electronically initiated HUF transfers below HUF 20 million as completing within five seconds, 24/7.

Can I send an instant transfer using a phone number?

Potentially. If the recipient has registered an eligible secondary identifier such as a phone number or email address with the provider, the instant-payment route can use that identifier instead of the account number.

Can qvik pay any US website?

No. A US merchant or its payment provider must explicitly expose a compatible qvik route. Otherwise use another payment method actually offered by the checkout.
