United Arab Emirates Payment Map
United Arab Emirates Payment Guide
The UAE payment landscape now includes several layers that should be separated before choosing a route. Aani is the UAE instant-payments platform operated by Al Etihad Payments, enabling participating financial institutions and payment service providers to move money in seconds using identifiers such as a mobile number, email address or QR code. Jaywan is the UAE national card scheme, with domestic card processing and co-badged versions that can use participating international networks outside the UAE. UAESWITCH connects domestic ATM and point-of-sale infrastructure. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Wallet create additional merchant or wallet routes. This guide separates those layers before comparing foreign merchants, AED conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

Aani, Jaywan, and Global Card Networks Solve Different Payment Jobs
As of August 19, 2026, Aani is a mature instant-payment platform for UAE users and participating institutions, while Jaywan is the UAE national card scheme and has entered active market rollout. Aani is an account-payment and instant-transfer layer; Jaywan is a card scheme. A Jaywan card can be domestic-only or co-badged with a global network, so international acceptance depends on the exact card configuration. When the merchant or recipient is outside the UAE, identify the live foreign checkout or verified transfer route rather than assuming a domestic Aani or Jaywan path automatically travels abroad.

Which UAE Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?
The logo visible to the payer is only the first clue. Aani is an instant-payment platform, Jaywan is a card scheme, UAESWITCH is domestic switching infrastructure, global cards rely on their networks and issuers, PayPal adds an account and funding layer, and Apple Pay or Google Wallet hands an eligible card into a supported merchant flow.
| Payment Method | Common Use | What Actually Controls It |
|---|---|---|
| Aani | Instant person, business and merchant payments inside the UAE | Participating licensed financial institution or payment service provider, eligible account, recipient mobile number, email address or QR code where supported, AED amount, authentication, fraud controls, transaction state and reconciliation. Aani operates 24/7 and is designed for instant domestic digital payments; a foreign merchant needs a separate supported route unless a regulated provider explicitly bridges the payment. |
| Jaywan | UAE debit and prepaid card payments, with domestic and co-badged international use depending on the exact card | The issuing institution, whether the card is mono-badged or co-badged, merchant acceptance, domestic or international network used, available funds, card controls, currency, authentication, recurring support, risk checks and final authorization. AEP states Jaywan is the UAE national card scheme and is connected with global payment networks. |
| UAESWITCH | Domestic ATM and point-of-sale connectivity | The participating bank, ATM or merchant terminal, domestic switch rules, card profile, authorization and transaction state. UAESWITCH is infrastructure, not a universal foreign checkout product. |
| Visa / Mastercard / American Express | Online and in-person merchant checkout, travel and subscriptions | The live merchant, exact UAE-issued card, network acceptance, issuer, available funds or credit, online and international controls, merchant country or category, billing profile, currency, authentication, recurring terms, limits, risk checks and authorization. |
| PayPal | Online checkout and supported automatic payments | The merchant must expose PayPal. Then the UAE PayPal account, account status, selected funding method, transaction type, currency conversion, automatic-payment agreement where used, payment state, applicable fees and refund destination must fit current PayPal terms. |
| Apple Pay | Supported in-store, app and web checkout | The UAE supports Apple Pay, but the exact participating bank or issuer and eligible card still matter. Merchant integration, device or browser, card profile, currency, recurring support and issuer authorization remain separate checks. |
| Google Wallet / Google Pay | Supported contactless, app and web payment flows | Google lists supported UAE institutions and cards. The merchant flow, device, Google account, exact eligible card, issuer, country, currency, transaction type and final authorization still determine the route. |
| Regulated Bank / Transfer Provider | International invoices, business payments and verified recipients | The legal provider and recipient, identity checks, send and receive currencies, live rate and fees, funding method, recipient account, delivery route, timing, transaction state, cancellation or recall rules and refund or return process. |
| Prepaid / Virtual Card | Selected online purchases and controlled spending | The exact card program, verification, balance, merchant acceptance, recurring capability, country, currency, authentication, credential lifetime and refund behavior. |
| Gift Card / Store Balance | Retail, gaming, app stores, streaming and platform purchases | The issuer, authorized seller, code state, account or store region, currency, eligible products, subscription rules, remaining balance, backup-payment requirements and refund destination. Closed balance is not general AED cash. |
Home Ground
Aani Is an Instant Account Layer; Jaywan Is a Card Layer
Both are major UAE payment developments, but they are not interchangeable. Aani routes instant digital payments between participating institutions and users. Jaywan provides a domestic card scheme, with some cards co-badged for international network use. The actual route depends on whether the user is initiating an account payment or presenting a card credential.
Aani: Real-Time Domestic Payments
Al Etihad Payments describes Aani as an instant-payments platform available through partner licensed financial institutions and payment service providers. Users can send money using supported proxies such as a mobile number or email and can use QR-based payment functions. For diagnosis, record the participating institution, sender and recipient, amount, identifier, authorization and final transaction state.
Jaywan: UAE National Card Scheme
Jaywan is designed for UAE card payments and supports debit and prepaid products. Domestic transactions can route through UAE infrastructure. Co-badged Jaywan cards can use participating global networks internationally, so the international route depends on the exact card and partner network rather than the Jaywan name alone.
Mono-Badge vs Co-Badged Matters
A domestic-only Jaywan card and a Jaywan card co-badged with Visa, Mastercard, Discover or UnionPay do not have the same foreign acceptance path. Before relying on Jaywan abroad, identify the actual card, co-badge, issuer, international-use controls, merchant network acceptance, currency, authentication and authorization.
UAESWITCH: Infrastructure, Not a Merchant App
UAESWITCH connects UAE bank ATM and point-of-sale facilities. It helps explain domestic card processing but should not be presented as a consumer wallet or as a guarantee that the same card works at a foreign merchant.
Global Cards Remain Separate Routes
Visa, Mastercard and American Express checkout still depends on the merchant and issuer. Even where a card is stored in Apple Pay or Google Wallet, the underlying UAE-issued card profile, network, country, currency, merchant category, recurring setup and authorization remain decisive.
PayPal Adds Account and Conversion Layers
PayPal can simplify merchant checkout but adds account status, funding-source selection and currency-conversion decisions. PayPal UAE states that purchases without currency conversion can be fee-free for the buyer, while conversion can introduce a PayPal transaction exchange rate and fee. Verify the live transaction instead of relying on a static rate.

What Changes When an AED Payment Goes Abroad?
A foreign merchant or recipient defines the entry point. Aani is primarily a UAE instant-payment platform. A mono-badged domestic Jaywan card should not be assumed to have the same foreign reach as a co-badged Jaywan card using a participating international network. Global Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Wallet or a regulated transfer can create different cross-border routes. Merchant country, billing entity, foreign currency, AED conversion, authentication, recurring model, payment state and refund destination then become part of the route.
| Foreign Payment Job | First Route to Inspect | What Changes Outside the UAE |
|---|---|---|
| US subscription | A merchant-listed recurring global card, PayPal or wallet-backed card route | Add the US billing entity, USD price, UAE card or PayPal account, signup authentication, stored credential or billing agreement, later renewals, AED/USD conversion, final posted cost, cancellation and refund conversion. |
| Foreign online shopping | The card, PayPal or wallet route actually shown by the merchant | Check exact UAE-issued card profile, Jaywan co-badge where relevant, merchant and shipping rules, billing country, network acceptance, issuer authorization, foreign currency, conversion, taxes, returns and refund destination. |
| International invoice | A verified regulated bank or transfer route supplied by the legal merchant or provider | Identify the actual recipient, account, send and receive currencies, rate and fees, reference, transfer type, timing, payment state, reconciliation, cancellation or recall options and refund process. |
| Foreign travel booking | Merchant-listed global card, PayPal or wallet checkout | Check deposits and holds, settlement currency, merchant country, card controls, authentication, cancellation policy, no-show terms, refund timing and AED reconversion. |

Same UAE Payer, New US Merchant and AED/USD Money Trail
A UAE payer reaching a US merchant should start with the methods the US checkout actually offers. A UAE-issued global card, co-badged Jaywan card using its international network where supported, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Wallet, or a regulated transfer can form the route. Aani and domestic switching do not automatically create a US merchant payment door.
Start With the US Checkout
Record whether the merchant shows Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, invoice or transfer instructions. Then inspect the exact UAE card or account and provider. A domestic payment product absent from the checkout is not available for that purchase.
Identify the Jaywan Co-Badge
If the payer has Jaywan, determine whether the card is mono-badged or co-badged and which international network is present. AEP says co-badged cards can use the respective global networks for international transactions. Merchant acceptance and issuer authorization still decide the payment.
Trace the AED/USD Money Trail
Freeze the US merchant’s USD price first. If checkout offers AED, identify who converts and the displayed rate or markup. Otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final AED posting and any separate issuer, PayPal or provider charges. Refunds can convert back at a different rate.
Where the Route Breaks
Find the Failed Layer Before Retrying
A card decline belongs to authorization; a profile rejection belongs to billing or country; a foreign-only failure belongs to the cross-border route; an unexpected AED amount belongs to the money trail; a missing PayPal or wallet button belongs to that merchant layer; an Aani problem belongs to the participating institution and instant-payment state. Read the first payment state before creating another attempt.
Card Checkout Declined
Record the exact issuer message, amount, available funds or credit, pending holds, card status and controls, merchant country, billing profile, currency, authentication and recurring setup.
Authentication Failed
Separate the authentication stage from authorization. Record whether no challenge appeared, the issuer app or code failed, the session expired, or authentication succeeded before a later decline.
Cross-Border Route Blocked
Compare payer and merchant countries, exact card or account profile, Jaywan co-badge where relevant, currency, international controls, merchant category, authentication and provider risk rules.
AED Money Trail Changed the Amount
Reconcile the merchant’s original currency, any merchant or PayPal conversion, card authorization, final AED posting, separate fees, transaction date and refund credit.
Order and Payment States Disagree
Check whether the first card, PayPal, wallet, Aani or transfer attempt is declined, pending, completed, reversed, returned or refunded before resending.
PayPal Layer Missing
Use the PayPal guide when the merchant never offers PayPal, the UAE account cannot continue, a funding method cannot be selected, currency changes the route or an automatic-payment agreement fails.
Straight Answers
Which UAE Payment Layer Controls the Answer?
What is Aani?
Aani is the UAE instant-payments platform operated by Al Etihad Payments, a Central Bank of the UAE subsidiary. It lets participating institutions offer real-time payments using supported identifiers such as mobile numbers, email addresses or QR codes. It is primarily a UAE instant-payment route, not a universal foreign ecommerce checkout method.
What is Jaywan?
Jaywan is the UAE national card scheme. It supports domestic debit and prepaid card use, and co-badged Jaywan cards can use participating international payment networks outside the UAE. The exact issuer, card type and co-badge therefore matter before assuming foreign acceptance.
Can I use Aani to pay any US website?
No. Aani does not automatically create a US merchant checkout route. Use it only where a regulated merchant or provider explicitly presents a compatible account-payment flow. Otherwise start with the payment methods actually shown by the US merchant.
Can a Jaywan card work outside the UAE?
Some can. Al Etihad Payments states that co-badged Jaywan cards can conduct international transactions through their respective global payment networks. A mono-badged card and a co-badged card do not have the same route, so check the exact card, network, issuer and merchant acceptance.
Does PayPal remove AED/USD conversion costs?
No. PayPal UAE publishes separate currency-conversion terms and fees. Check the live merchant currency, PayPal conversion choice, selected funding source, transaction exchange rate, final AED posting and refund destination.
