Thailand’s Payment Map
Thailand Payment Guide
Thailand’s payment landscape is easier to read when the rail, QR flow, app, wallet, and merchant checkout are separated. PromptPay is the domestic account and identifier-based payment route through participating institutions. Thai QR Payment is the merchant QR flow used through eligible banking or payment apps. TrueMoney and other wallets add product-specific account layers. Cards and PayPal enter merchant checkout. This guide maps those roles before comparing foreign merchants, THB conversion, renewals, refunds, and failures.
Country Read
PromptPay, Thai QR, Wallets, and Card Checkout Are Different Layers
Start by naming the route. A PromptPay transfer, Thai QR merchant payment, TrueMoney wallet payment, mobile-bank transfer, direct card authorization, PayPal checkout, and cross-border QR linkage create different payment states, limits, recurring conditions, and recovery paths. For a foreign merchant, use only the route it actually offers, then check the participating institution or provider, payer and merchant countries, THB currency path, authentication, recurring setup, total cost, and refund route.
Home-Ground Rail Map
Which Thai Rail, QR Flow, App, or Checkout Is Moving the Money?
The useful distinction is the mechanism. PromptPay moves eligible domestic payments through participating institutions and registered identifiers or requests. Thai QR lets participating apps interact with compatible merchant QR flows. TrueMoney and other wallets add their own account, funding, QR, transfer, remittance, or merchant products. Mobile-banking apps are interfaces into bank and PromptPay flows. Cards and PayPal belong to merchant checkout.
| Rail / Product Layer | Route Role | What Still Decides |
|---|---|---|
| PromptPay | Domestic transfers, mobile banking payments, bill payments, Thai QR-related flows | PromptPay is a domestic payment route through participating institutions using registered identifiers, payment requests, and related QR flows. The payer institution or app, recipient or merchant, identifier or request, amount, limits, security, transaction state, and recovery determine the payment. Cross-border use requires an explicit supported linkage or corridor |
| Thai QR Payment | QR code payments through mobile banking apps and supported merchants | Thai QR Payment is the merchant QR flow, not the payer account itself. A participating mobile-banking or payment app reads a compatible merchant QR; the payer account or wallet, merchant, amount, currency, limits, transaction state, fees where applicable, and refund route still control the payment |
| TrueMoney | Wallet payments, online and offline merchants, bills, mobile top-ups, supported services | TrueMoney is a wallet and account ecosystem with merchant, top-up, bill, QR, transfer, remittance, and other product-specific flows. Account status, funding, merchant or recipient integration, country, currency, destination, limits, fees, verification, transaction state, and refund or receiving method depend on the exact product |
| LINE Pay | Merchant-specific wallet payments, supported online and offline merchants, selected app payments | A LINE-linked payment flow is provider- and merchant-specific. Confirm the current provider and product in the live app or checkout, account status, merchant integration, funding method, country, currency, limits, and service coverage rather than relying on a historical wallet name |
| Mobile Banking Apps | Transfers, QR payments, bills, local merchant payments, account-to-account payments | Mobile-banking apps are interfaces into participating bank accounts and products such as PromptPay, Thai QR, bills, transfers, and merchant-payment flows. The underlying bank account or rail, recipient or merchant, amount, limits, security, transaction state, and recovery matter more than the app screen itself |
| Bank Transfer | Invoices, domestic payments, local services, selected merchants | “Bank transfer” is too broad to identify the route. Confirm the participating bank product, PromptPay or another domestic transfer, merchant collection flow, or international transfer; then verify the recipient or merchant, account details, reference, currency, fees, timing, status, cancellation, recovery, and refund process. A one-time transfer does not create recurring authorization |
| Visa / Mastercard | Online shopping, subscriptions, software, digital services, international payments | Acceptance depends on the merchant, card profile, issuer settings, country, currency, authentication, and transaction type |
| Debit Cards | Domestic payments, online shopping, selected subscriptions | Issuer support, available balance, card status, online and international use, recurring billing, and authentication matter |
| Credit Cards | Subscriptions, travel, software, international purchases, selected online stores | May work when the merchant and issuer support the card profile, recurring billing, country, currency, funds or credit, and authentication |
| PayPal | Selected online shopping, international purchases, supported merchants | Depends on merchant integration, account country and status, transaction type, currency, and displayed funding method |
| Wise Card | Regulated THB-funded transfers; Wise Card availability is separate | Thailand is not in the current standard Wise Card availability list; verify live account eligibility and the exact transfer or rollout feature |
| Prepaid / Virtual Cards | Selected one-time online payments, spending control, temporary card use | Eligibility varies by card program or virtual-card type, activation, registration, underlying account, balance, recurring support, holds, and verification |
| Gift Cards | Gaming, app stores, streaming, platform-specific purchases, digital balance | Issuer, seller, account or store region, currency, eligible-product, subscription, refund, and code rules must match |
Home Ground
Account Route, QR Flow, Wallet Product, and Card Checkout Are Different Layers
Inside Thailand, the app on the screen and the route moving the money may be different. PromptPay handles eligible domestic account payments and identifiers; Thai QR is the merchant QR flow; mobile-banking apps expose bank and PromptPay products; TrueMoney exposes wallet and other provider products; and cards enter merchant authorization. Identify the mechanism before comparing speed or acceptance.
PromptPay
PromptPay is the domestic account and identifier route. Confirm the participating institution, payer app, registered identifier or payment request, recipient or merchant, amount, currency, limits, security prompt, transaction state, fees where applicable, and recovery or refund path. A PromptPay transfer and a card purchase can both be fast while remaining different payment states.
Thai QR Payment
Thai QR Payment is the merchant QR layer. Verify the compatible merchant QR, participating payer app or institution, linked account or wallet, amount, currency, limits, transaction state, and refund process. Cross-border QR works only through a listed linkage or corridor with compatible participants; domestic Thai QR availability does not create overseas acceptance by itself.
TrueMoney
TrueMoney may work for eligible wallet, top-up, bill, transfer, domestic merchant, overseas QR, or remittance flows when the account, product, destination, merchant network, funding, limits, fees, and verification conditions are met.
LINE Pay
A LINE-linked wallet flow may work only where the current provider, account, merchant integration, funding method, country, currency, and service coverage support it. Confirm the live app and checkout rather than relying on an older wallet name.
Mobile Banking Apps
Thai mobile-banking apps can expose PromptPay, Thai QR, bills, transfers, and bank-account products. Trace the payment through the actual bank account and rail: check the participating bank, recipient or merchant, identifier or account details, amount, currency, limits, security, transaction state, and recovery instead of attributing every result to the banking app itself.
Cards and Gift Cards
Cards and platform balances may work only when the merchant, issuer or seller, card program, account region, currency, product, recurring-payment, authentication, refund, and authorization conditions are met.
Leaving Thailand
What Changes When the Merchant Is Outside Thailand?
Leaving Thailand usually means rebuilding the route. The foreign merchant decides whether to offer an international card, PayPal, wallet integration, invoice, transfer, or an explicit PromptPay/Thai QR cross-border linkage. Then the Thai account, wallet or card, merchant country, account region, billing currency, THB conversion, recurring setup, authentication, payment state, total cost, and refund or recovery path must still fit.
| Foreign Payment Job | First Route to Inspect | What Changes Outside Thailand |
|---|---|---|
| US-based subscription | A merchant-listed recurring card, PayPal, wallet-linked card, or other supported subscription route | The route usually adds a US merchant or billing entity, USD pricing, signup authentication where applicable, later merchant-initiated renewals, Thailand card or account-country checks, issuer or provider approval, THB/USD conversion, total posted cost, cancellation, and refund reconversion |
| AI tool or SaaS | A route the service supports for both signup and later renewal, or a verified invoice flow | Separate signup from renewal. Check billing entity, Thailand account or card country, stored credential or PayPal agreement, invoice data, billing currency, conversion, authentication at signup, later issuer or provider approval, retry rules, total cost, and refund path |
| Foreign app store | The card, wallet, PayPal, store balance, or other method allowed inside the current account and store region | Check account country, store region, payment-method country, currency, eligible product, subscription status, remaining balance, backup-payment requirement, and where a refund or cancellation credit returns |
| Gaming platform | The card, wallet, PayPal, gift-card balance, or other route allowed by the current gaming account and store region | Check account country, store region, marketplace seller or merchant, payment-method country, currency, eligible product, subscription, delayed charges, gift-card region, and refund destination |
| Foreign online shopping | The card, PayPal, wallet integration, invoice, or other route actually shown by the foreign merchant | Check the Thailand-issued card or account profile, merchant and shipping countries, billing country, card or wallet acceptance, authorization, THB money trail, taxes or duties where relevant, return policy, and refund destination. A domestic PromptPay or Thai QR route is not a substitute unless the merchant explicitly integrates it |
| International invoice | The verified bank, transfer-provider, card, PayPal, or other invoice route named by the merchant | Identify the rail before paying. Verify the legal recipient, account details, reference, send and receive currencies, conversion, fee option, timing, intermediary deductions where relevant, cancellation or recall rules, merchant reconciliation, and refund conditions |
| Foreign merchant offering PromptPay or Thai QR | Only through an explicit supported cross-border linkage with participating institutions, payer applications, and compatible merchant or recipient flows | Verify the listed corridor, participating payer app and financial institution, merchant QR or recipient integration, amount, currency treatment, limits, fees, transaction state, and refund route. PromptPay availability inside Thailand does not create foreign acceptance by itself |
| TrueMoney or another wallet for a foreign service | Only where the merchant, QR network, transfer provider, or checkout explicitly supports the exact wallet, overseas QR, remittance, or funding product | Name the product first. Check account status, merchant or recipient integration, funding, destination, country, currency, limits, fees, verification, transaction type, recurring behavior, transaction state, and refund or receiving route. The wallet brand alone does not prove overseas acceptance |
Account, QR, Wallet, Card, and Foreign Checkout
PromptPay, Thai QR, Wallet Products, and Card Checkout Are Separate Routes
PromptPay is the domestic account route; Thai QR is the merchant QR flow; mobile-banking apps expose bank and PromptPay products; TrueMoney and other wallets add their own product ecosystems; cards enter merchant authorization; and foreign merchants may integrate only selected routes. Name the layer before comparing acceptance, recurring billing, speed, or recovery.
Use PromptPay When the Account Route Fits
For domestic PromptPay, verify the participating institution, registered identifier or payment request, payer app, recipient or merchant, amount, currency, limits, security, transaction state, and recovery. For cross-border use, verify the exact supported linkage rather than assuming the domestic route travels abroad.
Use Thai QR When the Merchant and Payer App Share the Flow
For Thai QR, verify the compatible merchant QR, participating payer app or institution, linked account or wallet, amount, currency, limits, transaction state, and refund path. Overseas QR use requires a listed linkage or corridor with compatible participants; scanning a QR abroad is not enough by itself.
Name the Wallet Product Before the Brand
TrueMoney and other wallet-linked flows can represent merchant payments, top-ups, bills, QR, transfers, overseas QR, remittance, or other product-specific routes. Check the exact current product, account, funding, merchant or recipient integration, country, currency, limits, fees, verification, transaction state, and refund or receiving method.
Let the Foreign Merchant Define the Card Door
Use only a card route the foreign merchant actually shows. Then check the exact Thailand-issued Visa, Mastercard, debit, credit, prepaid, or virtual card profile, merchant country, billing currency, online and international controls, recurring support, authentication, available funds or credit, issuer rules, total posted cost, and refund route.
Trace the THB Money Trail
Start with the merchant’s original currency, then identify who converts first: merchant or DCC provider, PayPal or another provider, card network and issuer, or transfer route. Compare authorization, posted THB amount, separate fees, transaction date, available funds or credit, and refund credit. Do not compare numbers from different stages as though they were one exchange rate.
Read the State Before Opening a Backup Route
Confirm whether the merchant created an order and whether the payment rail shows declined, pending, completed, reversed, refunded, returned, or awaiting reconciliation. A backup card, PayPal route, wallet, transfer, or store balance creates a new state and can duplicate the first attempt while it is unresolved.
Failed Gate Map
Find the Failed Rail or Gate Before You Retry
Start with the route that failed. A card decline belongs to card authorization; a foreign-only failure belongs to the corridor; an order that disagrees with the funding record belongs to payment state; an address or country rejection belongs to the profile layer; a changed final THB amount belongs to the money trail; and a missing or denied PayPal flow belongs to the PayPal layer.
Card Authorization Gate
Use the card-decline guide when the merchant accepts the card route but authorization fails. Record the exact issuer message, full authorization amount, available funds or credit, pending holds, card status and controls, merchant country or category, billing profile, currency, recurring setup, authentication result, and whether the issuer actually received the authorization request.
Cross-Border Route Gate
Use the international-payment guide when the same Thailand-issued card, wallet, or account works domestically but fails for a foreign merchant, country, currency, merchant category, or account region. Compare payer and merchant countries, card or account country, currency, authentication, online and international controls, issuer or provider risk, and route-specific restrictions.
Order and Payment States Disagree
Use the payment-state guide when the merchant order and payment record disagree. A card can leave a pending authorization, PromptPay or Thai QR can have a separate account-payment state, TrueMoney can have product-specific transaction status, and PayPal keeps its own transaction record. Match the order with the route’s actual state before retrying.
Profile or Country Gate
Use the profile guide when the checkout rejects the genuine billing address, postal code, card country, payment profile, account or store region, shipping country, or merchant-supported-country combination. Fix only genuinely outdated data; a profile match still does not guarantee authentication or authorization.
Money Trail Gate
Use the money-trail guide when the problem is the amount rather than approval. Reconcile the merchant’s original currency, any DCC or wallet conversion, authorization, posted THB amount, separate issuer or provider fees, transaction date, and refund credit instead of comparing only one headline rate.
PayPal Account / Funding Layer
Use the PayPal issue guide when the merchant never offers PayPal, the Thailand account is limited, a card or bank cannot be linked or selected, the selected funding is declined, the currency changes the route, or an automatic-payment agreement fails. Start with the visible PayPal layer instead of treating every symptom as a card problem.
Published Corridors
Open the Payer → Destination Route Map
Open Thailand → United States when you need this page’s Thailand-side conditions plus a specific foreign merchant, USD pricing, recurring route, QR linkage, wallet product, or transfer requirement. The other corridors are useful contrast cases: watch how the same card, wallet, account, country, currency, authentication, payment state, and refund rules change when the payer country changes.

Route Preflight
Six Checks to Run Before You Trust the Thailand Route
Before paying, identify whether you are using PromptPay, Thai QR, a TrueMoney or other wallet product, mobile banking, direct card checkout, PayPal, another transfer route, or closed store balance. Then check the exact merchant or recipient, account or card, country, currency, payment state, and refund or recovery path.
For PromptPay, Verify the Recipient or Merchant First
PromptPay is the domestic account and identifier route. Verify the participating institution, registered identifier or payment request, recipient or merchant, payer app, amount, limits, security, transaction state, and recovery. Cross-border use requires an explicit supported linkage rather than ordinary domestic availability.
For Thai QR, Verify the QR Flow and Payer App
Thai QR Payment is the merchant QR flow. Verify the merchant QR, participating payer app or bank, linked account or wallet, amount, limits, transaction state, and refund path. Cross-border use requires a supported linkage or corridor with compatible participants rather than ordinary domestic QR availability.
Name the Wallet Product Before the Brand
TrueMoney and other wallet-linked products can represent merchant payments, top-ups, bills, QR, transfers, overseas QR, remittance, or other product-specific routes. Check the exact current product, account, funding, merchant or recipient integration, country, currency, limits, fees, verification, transaction state, and refund or receiving method.
Let the Foreign Merchant Define the Card Door
Use only a card route the foreign merchant actually shows. Then check the exact Thailand-issued Visa, Mastercard, debit, credit, prepaid, or virtual card profile, merchant country, billing currency, online and international controls, recurring support, authentication, available funds or credit, issuer rules, total posted cost, and refund route.
Trace the THB Money Trail
A foreign merchant can charge USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, or another currency, but the useful question is where the original currency disappears. Record the checkout currency, first converter, authorization, posted THB amount, separate issuer or provider fees, transaction date, and refund conversion rather than relying on one headline rate.
Straight Answers
Which Thailand Payment Rail Controls the Answer?
The useful distinction is whether the payment uses PromptPay, Thai QR, a TrueMoney or other wallet product, mobile banking, direct card checkout, PayPal, another transfer route, or closed store balance. The answer changes with the mechanism.
What payment methods are common in Thailand?
Group them by job. PromptPay is the domestic account and identifier route. Thai QR is the merchant QR flow. TrueMoney and other wallets add product-specific merchant, QR, transfer, remittance, or funding layers. Mobile-banking apps expose participating bank and PromptPay flows. Visa and Mastercard belong to merchant card checkout. PayPal, Wise transfers, prepaid, virtual, bank-transfer, and gift-card routes add their own account or program rules.
How should I choose a payment method from Thailand to a US online service?
Start with the US service’s live checkout. A Thailand-issued card, PayPal route, wallet integration, invoice, transfer, or explicit PromptPay/Thai QR cross-border linkage are different routes. Compare Thailand account or card country, US merchant or billing entity, USD pricing, signup and renewal behavior, authentication, THB/USD conversion, total posted cost, limits, cancellation, and refund. Use the Thailand → United States corridor for destination-specific conditions.
Can PromptPay be used for foreign online subscriptions?
Not by default. PromptPay or Thai QR can work abroad only through an explicit supported cross-border payment linkage with participating institutions or payer apps and a compatible merchant or recipient flow. Verify the corridor, merchant or recipient identity, currency treatment, amount, limits, fees, transaction state, and refund path. PromptPay being widely available inside Thailand does not make it a universal foreign-subscription checkout.
Can TrueMoney or LINE Pay be used for international online payments?
Sometimes, but name the product first. A foreign merchant, QR network, transfer provider, or checkout must explicitly support the eligible TrueMoney or other wallet, QR, remittance, or funding flow. Check account status, funding, merchant or recipient integration, destination, country, currency, limits, fees, verification, recurring behavior, transaction state, and refund or receiving route. The wallet brand alone does not prove overseas acceptance.
Why was my Thai card declined on a foreign website?
First locate the failed gate. The foreign merchant may reject the Thailand-issued card profile or billing country; 3D Secure may stop before authorization; or the issuer may reject merchant country, category, amount, currency, recurring setup, international-use conditions, or risk. THB conversion belongs to the money trail and is not the explanation for every decline. Record the merchant order and payment state before retrying.

What We Checked: Thailand’s Payment Rails
We reviewed Bank of Thailand, TrueMoney, PayPal Thailand, and Wise materials on July 30, 2026. Bank of Thailand distinguishes PromptPay identifiers and domestic Thai QR payments from specific cross-border payment linkages, so overseas QR depends on a supported corridor and participating institutions. TrueMoney documents separate wallet, cross-border QR, and overseas-transfer products rather than one universal route. PayPal adds a merchant checkout and account layer, while Wise documents Thailand-specific transfer and verification rules separately from standard Wise Card country availability. Together these sources support the rail map used here; none guarantees that a specific foreign merchant, PromptPay or Thai QR linkage, wallet product, card, account, country, currency, recurring payment, or refund will be eligible.
Wise availability note: Wise’s current standard card-availability list does not include Thailand. Wise separately publishes Thailand-specific account verification and THB-transfer guidance. Do not assume that a new card, balance, account detail, or rollout feature is available until it appears in the user’s live account and current official help. Treat THB-funded transfer services separately from Wise Card availability.
Wallet naming note: Wallet brands, service availability, and merchant integrations can change. A name on this page does not prove that the service is available to every Thailand account or accepted by a particular merchant. Confirm the current provider app, account eligibility, funding method, country, currency, limits, fees, and checkout options.
