Spain Payment Map
Spain Payment Guide
Spain combines mature card acceptance with account-based payment layers that need to be separated before diagnosing a checkout. Bizum began as a mobile-number payment service connected to Spanish bank accounts and now supports person-to-person transfers, online merchant payments, and contactless merchant payments where the participating bank, app, and merchant flow support them. Banco de España describes Bizum as a payment solution based on instant transfers, while SEPA Credit Transfer, SEPA Instant Credit Transfer, and SEPA Direct Debit remain the wider euro account-payment frameworks. Visa and Mastercard cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Wallet create separate merchant and wallet routes. This guide maps those layers before comparing foreign merchants, EUR conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds, and recovery.
Country Read
Bizum Is a Payment Product Above Instant Account Infrastructure, Not a Universal Checkout Rail
As of August 17, 2026, Bizum supports person-to-person payments, online purchases, and contactless merchant payments in Spain, subject to the bank, app, merchant, and product flow. It also participates in European interoperability that lets users send person-to-person payments to supported users in Portugal and Italy. Those product experiences should be distinguished from SEPA Credit Transfer, SEPA Instant, and SEPA Direct Debit. Cards and mobile wallets use yet another merchant route. The live merchant or recipient instructions decide which layer is relevant.
Rail Map
Which Spanish App, Account Rail, Card, or Wallet Is Moving the Money?
Start with the mechanism rather than the logo. Bizum can identify the payment through a mobile number and participating bank flow; SEPA transfers use account and recipient details; Direct Debit uses a creditor mandate; cards rely on merchant network acceptance and issuer authorization; PayPal adds an account and funding layer; Apple Pay and Google Wallet hand eligible cards or payment methods into supported merchant checkout.
| Payment Method | Common Use | What Actually Controls It |
|---|---|---|
| Bizum person-to-person | Sending or requesting money using a mobile-number-based bank flow | The participating bank, activated Bizum service, linked eligible account, mobile number, recipient, amount, bank controls, instant-transfer processing, transaction state, and current service limits determine the payment. Banco de España describes Bizum as a solution based on instant transfers. |
| Bizum online shopping | Spanish ecommerce merchants that explicitly offer Bizum | The merchant and PSP must expose Bizum. The payer selects Bizum, identifies the mobile number or supported credential, and validates the purchase in the participating bank flow. Merchant integration, bank eligibility, amount, authentication, transaction state, refund path, and current limits matter. |
| Bizum contactless / Bizum Pay | Supported in-person merchant payments | Bizum now advertises contactless payment through Bizum Pay or participating bank apps. Availability depends on the compatible app and device, linked account or supported Bizum setup, merchant contactless acceptance, transaction type, authorization, amount, and current rollout. Do not assume every Bizum bank app exposes the same contactless feature. |
| SEPA Credit Transfer | Euro bank transfers, invoices, person and business payments | The payer and recipient IBANs, recipient identity, participating payment service providers, EUR amount, reference, account status, processing route, payment state, and recipient reconciliation determine the transfer. It is not the same user journey as Bizum merchant checkout. |
| SEPA Instant Credit Transfer | Euro account transfers designed to reach the recipient within seconds | The payer and recipient providers, eligible accounts, amount, recipient information, verification of payee where applicable, fraud controls, instant-payment availability, and payment state matter. Banco de España notes that instant transfers must be available through channels where a provider offers ordinary transfers under the EU instant-payment framework. |
| SEPA Direct Debit | Recurring bills, utilities, memberships, subscriptions, creditor collections | The creditor, mandate, IBAN, amount or collection rule, collection date, account state, cancellation or revocation, return process, and refund rights determine the route. It is a creditor-initiated collection, not a payer-pushed Bizum or credit transfer. |
| Visa / Mastercard cards | In-store and online shopping, travel, subscriptions, foreign merchants | Banco de España describes cards as payment instruments issued by a financial institution or merchant and identifies networks such as Visa and Mastercard on the card. The merchant, exact debit or credit profile, issuer, funds or credit, country, currency, authentication, merchant category, recurring capability, risk controls, and authorization decide each payment. |
| American Express and other card programs | Merchants that explicitly accept the exact card network or product | Acceptance is network- and product-specific. Verify the merchant, exact card, issuing institution, available credit or balance, international and online use, currency, authentication, recurring support, authorization, and refund. Do not infer support from Visa or Mastercard acceptance. |
| PayPal | Online checkout and supported recurring payments | The merchant must expose PayPal. Then the Spain PayPal account, account status, selected or backup funding source, transaction type, automatic-payment agreement where relevant, currency conversion, PayPal transaction state, fees, and refund destination must fit current PayPal terms. |
| Apple Pay | Supported in-store, app, and web checkout | Spain is an Apple Pay-supported market, but the exact card and issuer must be eligible. Merchant integration, device or browser, selected Wallet card, card network, issuer, country, currency, recurring support, device confirmation, final authorization, and refund remain separate checks. |
| Google Wallet / Google Pay | Supported contactless, app, and web payment flows | Google lists supported Spanish institutions and payment methods. Merchant integration, Google Account and device, eligible saved method, issuer, card network, country, currency, transaction type, recurring capability, and final authorization still determine whether a payment works. |
| Regulated bank or transfer provider | Invoices and domestic or cross-border recipient payments | Identify whether the route is SEPA, SEPA Instant, or another regulated international transfer. Verify the provider, legal recipient, account details, send and receive currencies, reference, current rate and fees, timing, transaction state, reconciliation, cancellation or recall options, and refund or return process. |
| Prepaid / Virtual Card | Selected online purchases and controlled spending | The exact program, activation or verification, balance or underlying account, card network, merchant acceptance, online and international use, holds, recurring capability, credential lifetime, billing profile, country, currency, and refund behavior determine eligibility. |
| Gift Card / Store Balance | Retail, gaming, app stores, streaming, and closed platforms | The issuer, authorized seller, code state, account or store region, currency, eligible product, subscription rules, remaining balance, backup-payment requirement, and refund destination must match. Closed balance is not general EUR cash. |
Home Ground
Bizum, SEPA, and Cards Can All Move Euros but They Do Not Share the Same Control Point
A Spanish payer can reach a merchant or recipient through several different paths. Bizum wraps an account-based instant-payment experience around supported person and merchant use cases. SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Instant are account-transfer schemes. Direct Debit is creditor-initiated. Cards use a merchant network and issuer decision. PayPal and mobile wallets add separate product layers. The payment state and recovery path follow the actual mechanism.
Bizum Person Payment: Mobile Identifier + Bank Account
For a person-to-person Bizum, confirm the participating bank, active Bizum profile, linked account, mobile number, intended recipient, amount, transaction confirmation, and resulting bank state. An instant payment is difficult to reverse after completion, so verify the recipient before authorizing it.
Bizum Ecommerce: Merchant Integration Required
Online Bizum works only when the merchant or PSP explicitly presents the route. The payer follows the merchant checkout into a supported bank validation flow. Merchant integration, current bank support, account eligibility, authentication, amount, payment state, order state, cancellation, and refund matter independently.
Bizum Contactless: A New Merchant Handoff
Bizum now advertises contactless payment through Bizum Pay or bank apps, but this should be treated as a live product capability rather than a universal property of every account. Check app and device support, bank eligibility, merchant terminal acceptance, selected account or product, amount, authorization, transaction state, and refund route.
SEPA Transfer: Account to Account
For a standard or instant SEPA transfer, verify the legal recipient, IBAN, recipient name, EUR amount, reference, transfer type, verification result where offered, payment state, recipient reconciliation, and recovery. A valid SEPA account route does not imply a merchant checkout accepts account payments.
Direct Debit: Mandate + Creditor Collection
For recurring SEPA Direct Debit, inspect the creditor, mandate, account, amount or rule, collection date, cancellation or revocation, return state, and refund rights. Do not diagnose it using only the rules for a one-time card or instant transfer.
Cards and Wallets: Merchant + Issuer
A Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, or Google Wallet purchase still needs a merchant route and an eligible underlying card or funding method. Check the merchant, network, card profile, issuer, country, currency, authentication, recurring support, funds or credit, risk, authorization, payment state, and refund.
European Interoperability
Bizum Can Reach Supported European Person-Payment Systems, but That Is Not the Same as Global Merchant Acceptance
Bizum’s current international page says users can send money to supported friends in Portugal and Italy even when those recipients do not use Bizum itself, through connected European payment solutions. Bizum also says it will continue expanding cross-border interoperability during 2026. That is meaningful for person-to-person payments in Europe, but it does not create a universal Bizum checkout route at merchants in the United States or other unsupported corridors.
Spain ↔ Portugal / Italy P2P
For supported person payments, identify the sender’s Bizum bank, recipient mobile number, destination payment solution, eligible account, amount, transaction confirmation, instant-transfer state, and current interoperability conditions. Treat the connection as product-specific, not as a generic international bank transfer.
European Merchant Payment Still Needs a Live Door
A merchant must still expose Bizum or another compatible payment integration. The fact that person-payment interoperability exists does not prove that a particular foreign ecommerce checkout supports Bizum. Check merchant country, PSP, transaction type, account eligibility, authorization, amount, payment state, and refund.
Outside the Supported Interconnection
Use the actual merchant or recipient route. That may be an international card, PayPal, wallet-backed card, regulated transfer provider, verified bank transfer, or another method explicitly listed by the merchant. Do not invent a Bizum bridge where none is offered.
Leaving Spain
What Changes When a Spanish Payment Reaches a Foreign Merchant?
A foreign merchant decides which routes exist. Within the SEPA area, a valid EUR transfer or direct-debit arrangement can remain within the European account-payment framework when the recipient or creditor provides the correct route. Outside that context, a Spanish-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal account, Apple Pay or Google Wallet handoff, or regulated transfer is often the relevant path. The merchant country, billing profile, currency, authentication, recurring setup, payment state, conversion, and refund become part of the corridor.
| Foreign Payment Job | First Route to Inspect | What Changes Outside Spain |
|---|---|---|
| US-based subscription | A merchant-listed recurring card, PayPal, wallet-backed card, or verified invoice route | Add the US billing entity, USD price, exact Spanish card or account profile, international acceptance, signup authentication, stored credential or PayPal agreement, later renewals, EUR/USD conversion, total posted cost, cancellation, payment state, and refund reconversion. |
| US online shopping | The card, PayPal, wallet, invoice, or transfer route actually shown by the US merchant | Check the exact Spanish-issued card or account, network acceptance, merchant and shipping rules, billing country, authorization, wallet or PayPal integration, USD/EUR money trail, taxes, returns, and refund destination. Domestic Bizum availability does not create a US merchant route by itself. |
| SEPA-area invoice | SEPA Credit Transfer or SEPA Instant when the recipient provides a valid EUR account route | Verify the legal recipient, IBAN, recipient name, EUR amount, reference, standard or instant transfer type, verification result, payment state, reconciliation, and recovery. Do not confuse a merchant payment link with a direct SEPA transfer. |
| European person payment through Bizum interoperability | Bizum’s supported international person-payment flow where the destination solution is connected | Check the supported destination, mobile number, recipient, linked payment solution, participating bank, amount, confirmation, current limits, payment state, and recovery. Current Bizum information specifically describes supported interoperability with Portugal and Italy. |
| Cross-border subscription inside SEPA | SEPA Direct Debit when explicitly offered, or a merchant-listed card/account route | For direct debit, inspect the creditor, mandate, amount, collection date, revocation and refund rights. For card or wallet billing, inspect the exact network and card profile, authentication, stored credential, recurring support, payment state, and refund route. |
| Non-SEPA international invoice | The verified bank, regulated transfer provider, card, PayPal, or invoice route named by the merchant | Identify the actual rail, legal recipient, account details, reference, send and receive currencies, conversion, current fees, timing, intermediary deductions where relevant, cancellation or recall rules, reconciliation, and refund conditions. |
Spain → United States
A Spanish Payer Usually Needs a Card, PayPal, Wallet, or Verified Transfer Door at the US Side
A Spanish payer reaching a US merchant should start with the live checkout, not the domestic payment menu. Visa or Mastercard card checkout, American Express where accepted, PayPal, Apple Pay, or Google Wallet can create merchant routes. A regulated transfer can serve a verified recipient or invoice. Bizum and SEPA matter only when the US merchant or an intermediary explicitly creates a compatible account-based bridge. USD pricing adds a EUR/USD money trail and later refund reconversion.
Start With the US Merchant’s Actual Checkout
Record the methods the US merchant actually shows for the Spanish account or shopper. Then inspect the exact card, PayPal, wallet, invoice, or transfer route, payer and merchant countries, recurring support, billing currency, authentication, issuer or provider rules, total posted cost, payment state, and refund.
Bizum Is Explicit Only
A US merchant does not automatically accept Bizum because the payer uses Bizum in Spain. Use Bizum only if the merchant or a regulated provider explicitly presents a compatible flow and identifies the merchant or recipient, bank or PSP, amount, currencies, authorization, payment state, onward delivery, and refund or recovery.
SEPA Does Not Automatically Create a US Merchant Door
SEPA is a European euro-payment framework. A regulated provider can supply a valid SEPA collection account as the Spain-side funding leg before onward USD delivery, but that provider then controls conversion and transfer to the United States. Without such an explicit bridge, a US merchant is not receiving a SEPA payment.
Trace the EUR/USD Money Trail
Freeze the US merchant’s original USD price first. If checkout offers EUR, record who performs the conversion and any displayed rate or markup. Otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final EUR posting, separate issuer or provider charges, transaction date, and any later USD refund converted back to EUR.
PayPal and Wallets Are Separate Merchant Lanes
PayPal requires the merchant to expose PayPal and the Spain account to remain eligible. Apple Pay and Google Wallet require compatible merchant integration and an eligible underlying card. They simplify the handoff but do not remove card issuer, country, currency, recurring, risk, authorization, or refund rules.
Read the First Payment State Before Switching
Confirm whether the merchant created an order and whether the card, PayPal, wallet, bank, Bizum, or transfer side shows declined, pending, completed, reversed, returned, or refunded. A backup route creates a new state and can duplicate the first attempt while it remains unresolved.
Where the Spain Route Breaks
Find the Failed Merchant, Card, Account, or State Gate Before You Retry
A card decline belongs to authorization; a bank-app confirmation problem belongs to authentication; an address or country rejection belongs to profile; a foreign-only failure belongs to the corridor; an unexpected EUR amount belongs to the money trail; a missing Bizum option belongs to merchant integration; and a recipient mismatch belongs to the transfer route. Identify the payment state before opening another method.
Card Checkout Gate Declined
Use the card-decline guide when the merchant accepts the card route but authorization fails. Record the issuer message, full authorization amount, card network and profile, available funds or credit, pending holds, card controls, merchant country or category, billing profile, currency, recurring setup, authentication result, and whether the issuer received the request.
Authentication Gate Failed
Use the authentication guide when the card route stops before or during 3D Secure. Record whether no challenge appeared, an issuer app or code failed, the session expired, or authentication succeeded and the later authorization was declined.
Profile or Country Gate Rejected
Use the profile guide when checkout rejects the genuine billing address, postal code, card country, PayPal or wallet profile, account or store region, shipping country, or supported-country combination. Correct only genuinely outdated data.
Cross-Border Route Blocked
Use the international-payment guide when the same Spanish card or account works domestically but fails abroad. Compare payer and merchant countries, card or account profile, currency, authentication, international controls, merchant category, issuer or provider risk, and route-specific restrictions.
Order and Payment States Disagree
Use the payment-state guide when the merchant and funding record disagree. Card authorizations, PayPal, Bizum, SEPA transfers, instant transfers, and direct debits can expose different states and recovery paths. Match the route before resending.
EUR Money Trail Changed the Final Amount
Use the money-trail guide when the issue is the amount rather than approval. Reconcile the merchant’s original currency, any merchant or PayPal conversion, card authorization, posted EUR amount, separate issuer or provider charges, transaction date, and refund credit.
Open the Layer
Inspect the Card, Wallet, Account, or Transfer Layer Separately
Use these guides when one component needs deeper inspection. Then return to the Spain map and destination corridor, because a method guide alone cannot decide whether the actual route is Bizum, SEPA, Direct Debit, card checkout, PayPal, a wallet handoff, or another regulated transfer.

Spain-Side Checks
Six Checks That Matter More Than the Payment Logo
Before paying, identify whether the route is Bizum person payment, Bizum ecommerce, Bizum contactless, SEPA Credit Transfer, SEPA Instant, Direct Debit, direct card checkout, PayPal, mobile wallet, another regulated transfer, or closed store balance. Then check the exact merchant or recipient, bank or issuer, country, currency, payment state, and recovery path.
For Bizum, Identify the Use Case
Do not treat P2P, ecommerce, contactless, and international person interoperability as one interchangeable route. Record whether the recipient is a person or merchant, the participating bank and app, mobile identifier, account, merchant or PSP, amount, authorization, transaction state, and refund or recovery process.
For Instant Transfers, Verify the Beneficiary
Banco de España emphasizes verification of payee under the instant-payment framework. Confirm the recipient name, IBAN where relevant, amount, reference, verification result, and transfer state before authorizing. Once a transfer is sent, recovery can depend on the beneficiary or provider process.
For Direct Debit, Inspect the Mandate
Check the creditor, mandate, account, amount or collection rule, date, cancellation or revocation, return state, and refund rights. A recurring debit should not be diagnosed using only one-time card or transfer rules.
For Cards, Confirm the Exact Network and Profile
Identify Visa, Mastercard, American Express, debit, credit, prepaid, virtual, or another card profile. Then check merchant acceptance, issuer controls, online and international use, authentication, country, currency, recurring support, funds or credit, limits, risk, and final authorization.
Trace the EUR Money Trail
Start with the merchant’s original currency, then identify who converts first: merchant, PayPal or another provider, card network and issuer, or transfer provider. Compare authorization, posted EUR amount, separate charges, transaction date, and refund credit at the same stage.
Read the State Before Opening a Backup Route
Confirm whether the merchant created an order and whether the payment layer shows declined, pending, completed, reversed, returned, refunded, or awaiting reconciliation. A backup card, PayPal lane, wallet, Bizum payment, or transfer can duplicate the first attempt while it is unresolved.
Straight Answers
Which Spanish Payment Layer Controls the Answer?
The useful distinction is whether the payment uses Bizum, a SEPA rail, Direct Debit, card checkout, PayPal, a wallet handoff, another regulated transfer, or closed balance. The answer changes with the mechanism.
Is Bizum the same thing as a SEPA Instant transfer?
No. Bizum is a payment product and user experience linked to participating bank accounts. Banco de España describes Bizum as a solution based on instant transfers, but SEPA Instant Credit Transfer is the wider euro account-transfer scheme. Product eligibility, merchant integration, mobile-number handling, and Bizum features are separate from the underlying transfer framework.
Can I pay online with Bizum?
Yes, where the merchant explicitly offers Bizum. Bizum’s official site describes online shopping by selecting Bizum at checkout and validating the purchase through the bank flow. Merchant and PSP integration, participating bank, account eligibility, amount, authentication, transaction state, and refund still matter.
Can I pay in person with Bizum?
Bizum currently advertises contactless merchant payment through Bizum Pay or participating bank apps. Availability depends on the current app and bank support, compatible device, merchant contactless acceptance, transaction type, authorization, and rollout. Check the live app rather than assuming every Bizum account has the same feature.
Can Bizum send money outside Spain?
Yes in supported interoperability routes. Bizum’s current international information says users can send person payments to supported recipients in Portugal and Italy through connected payment solutions. That does not mean every foreign merchant or country accepts Bizum; use only the live supported route.
Can I use Bizum to pay any US website?
No. A US merchant or provider must explicitly expose a compatible route. Domestic Bizum use and European person-payment interoperability do not create universal US checkout acceptance. At a typical US merchant, start with the card, PayPal, wallet, invoice, or transfer methods actually offered.
Does PayPal or a mobile wallet remove the Spanish card issuer from the decision?
Not necessarily. PayPal adds its own account and funding layer, while Apple Pay or Google Wallet commonly hands an eligible card into the merchant flow. The underlying issuer or account provider can still approve or decline according to its own rules.

How Current Is the Spain Payment Map?
We last checked this Spain payment map on August 17, 2026. Bizum’s contactless capability and European interoperability are evolving product areas, so participating banks, apps, merchants, and destination solutions can change. SEPA instant-payment implementation, card and wallet support, PayPal terms, currencies, recurring billing, authentication, payment states, fees, refunds, disputes, and recovery procedures can also change. Use the live merchant, recipient, bank, payment service provider, and current provider terms for the final decision.

What We Checked: Spain Payment Rails
We reviewed Bizum, Banco de España, the European Central Bank, PayPal Spain, Apple, and Google materials on August 17, 2026. The official sources show that Bizum supports person payments, online merchant payments, and contactless merchant payments, and that its current international interoperability includes supported person payments with Portugal and Italy. Banco de España describes Bizum as a solution based on instant transfers and explains the EU instant-payment requirements, while its card guidance distinguishes the issued card and network such as Visa or Mastercard. SEPA remains the wider euro account-payment framework. PayPal and mobile wallets add separate merchant or funding layers. None of these sources guarantees that a particular merchant, recipient, card, account, country, currency, subscription, refund, or cross-border route will be eligible.
