Finland Payment Guide

Finland combines euro-area bank transfers, a renewed domestic account-to-account service, MobilePay, international cards and card-based wallets. The refreshed Siirto service launched in June 2026 inside participating banks’ own mobile apps, bringing person-to-person payments, online purchases and bill delivery into one account-based service. Separately, the Bank of Finland reports that the vast majority of instant payments made in Finland are SEPA Instant Credit Transfers. MobilePay provides native merchant checkout, recurring and other business-payment routes, while its contactless tap feature can act as a card-wallet handoff for eligible supported cards. Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Wallet form additional merchant routes. This guide separates those layers before comparing foreign merchants, EUR/USD conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

Siirto, SEPA Instant and MobilePay Are Different Finnish Payment Layers

Start by identifying the live payment door. Siirto is an account-to-account service built into participating Finnish banking apps. SEPA Instant is the wider euro-area instant credit-transfer scheme used by banks and payment providers. MobilePay can be a native merchant checkout, payment link or recurring-payment service, while MobilePay contactless tapping follows an eligible card route and should not be confused with native online MobilePay acceptance. For a foreign merchant, start with the method actually offered by the merchant: an eligible card, PayPal, wallet, explicit MobilePay checkout or a regulated transfer.

Which Finnish Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?

The customer-facing app, bank-transfer scheme and card network are separate questions. Siirto can initiate eligible account payments from bank apps, SEPA Instant moves qualifying euro transfers across participating institutions in seconds, MobilePay can initiate merchant or person payments, and cards, PayPal and wallets follow their own acceptance and authorization rules.

Payment MethodCommon UseWhat Actually Controls It
SiirtoPerson payments, online purchases and bill delivery in participating Finnish bank appsThe renewed 2026 service currently operates through participating bank apps, including OP Pohjola and Nordea. The payer’s bank, recipient or merchant support, registered phone/account relationship, euro amount, approval and transaction state control the route.

The payer and recipient PSPs, account details, verification of payee where applicable, amount, compliance controls and transaction state determine whether a specific payment completes instantly.

2026 Domestic Change

Siirto Was Renewed Into a Broader Bank-App Payment Service

Siirto announced a renewed service in June 2026. Instead of requiring a separate consumer app, the current service operates in participating banks’ own mobile apps. It combines sending money to a friend, paying online and receiving bills. Siirto says money can move account-to-account in real time using a phone number for person payments, while online merchants can offer a bank-app checkout. Treat bank participation and the live merchant option as separate eligibility checks rather than assuming every Finnish account or website exposes Siirto.

Pay a Friend

The renewed Siirto allows eligible users to transfer money in real time using a phone number through the participating banking app. The payer and recipient still need compatible registrations and bank support.

Online Payment

Siirto is available as a Finnish account-based online payment method at participating merchants. A merchant must integrate the service; the consumer then approves the payment through the supported bank channel.

Bills in the Banking App

The 2026 renewal added direct bill delivery into the user’s banking environment. This is a domestic invoicing/payment feature and should not be confused with an international merchant checkout or card route.

Euro Instant Layer

SEPA Instant Is Now a Mainstream Finnish Account-Transfer Route

The Bank of Finland reported in June 2026 that instant payments became more common in 2025 and that the vast majority of instant payments made in Finland are SEPA Instant Credit Transfers. Euro-area banks have been subject to staged EU instant-payment requirements: receiving euro instant payments from January 2025 and sending them from October 2025, alongside verification-of-payee requirements. The infrastructure can settle payments within seconds around the clock, but the customer-facing bank service, reachable recipient, account information and transaction state still determine the specific route.

MobilePay Split

Native MobilePay Checkout and MobilePay Tapping Are Different Routes

MobilePay in Finland supports native online payment integration and recurring-payment products. Separately, contactless tapping can use an eligible card at compatible physical terminals. The tap feature is not universally available to every Finnish card: MobilePay maintains a live list of supported banks and cards. That means a user’s ability to pay with MobilePay online, send money in the app and tap a card at a terminal should be tested as separate capabilities.

Native Online MobilePay

The merchant or payment provider must expose MobilePay. The user is redirected to or approves through the app, and the configured funding route, amount, merchant and final transaction state determine completion.

MobilePay Tap

For supported cards, MobilePay says the user can tap wherever that physical card works. Abroad, this follows the underlying card-network acceptance and issuer controls rather than proving the merchant supports native MobilePay checkout.

Eligibility Is Card- and Bank-Specific

MobilePay’s live Finland help currently lists only specific institutions/cards for tapping, and more may be added. Check the supported-bank list before treating a Finnish MobilePay user as tap-enabled.

Card Market

Cards and Mobile-App Card Payments Remain Important in Finland

Bank of Finland statistics show strong card usage and continued growth in payments initiated through mobile applications. In the second quarter of 2026, contactless payments also represented a large share of Finnish card-payment value. These statistics describe market behavior, not eligibility for a specific merchant: the exact card, merchant network, issuer controls, authentication and currency still decide each transaction.

Leaving Finland

What Changes When a EUR Payment Leaves the Finnish Merchant Context?

A foreign merchant or verified recipient defines the entry point. Native Siirto and MobilePay merchant payments require explicit merchant or provider support. MobilePay tapping can follow an eligible international card at a compatible physical terminal. SEPA standard or instant transfers can reach compatible euro accounts across the SEPA area. Outside those routes, international cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a regulated transfer form separate paths. Merchant country, destination currency, authentication, recurring billing, payment state and refund destination then become part of the corridor.

Same Finnish Payer, New US Merchant and EUR/USD Money Trail

A payer in Finland reaching a US merchant should start with the live US checkout. A Finland-issued international card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay backed by an eligible card, or a regulated transfer can form the route. Native MobilePay online payment should be treated as available only where the US merchant or payment provider explicitly exposes a compatible integration. MobilePay tapping can be relevant at physical US terminals for eligible supported cards. Siirto and SEPA are account-payment routes and do not by themselves create a normal US ecommerce checkout.

Start With the US Checkout

Record the methods the US merchant actually displays, then inspect the exact Finnish card, PayPal account, wallet or transfer provider.

Separate MobilePay Online From MobilePay Tap

A US website needs an explicit MobilePay-compatible checkout route. At a physical terminal, supported MobilePay tapping can instead follow the underlying international card network. These are different payment paths.

Trace the EUR/USD Money Trail

Freeze the US merchant’s USD price first. If checkout or a provider offers EUR, identify who converts and the displayed rate or markup. Otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final EUR posting and any separate issuer/provider charges. Refund conversion may differ later.

Straight Answers

Which Finnish Payment Layer Controls the Answer?

What changed with Siirto in 2026?

Siirto was renewed in June 2026 as a broader account-based service inside participating banks’ own mobile apps. It combines person payments, online payments and bill delivery. Check the current participating bank and merchant route before using it.

Are instant bank payments common in Finland?

Yes. The Bank of Finland reported in June 2026 that the vast majority of instant payments made in Finland are SEPA Instant Credit Transfers. Individual eligibility still depends on the payer and recipient payment providers and account route.

Can I use MobilePay at any US website?

No. Native MobilePay online checkout requires the US merchant or its payment provider to offer a compatible MobilePay integration.

Can I tap with MobilePay outside Finland?

For an eligible supported card activated for tapping, MobilePay says tapping can work wherever the physical card works. The current Finland supported-bank/card list is limited and can change, so check eligibility first.

Can Siirto or SEPA pay any US website?

No. Siirto is a Finnish account-to-account service and SEPA is a euro account-transfer framework. A US merchant or regulated provider must explicitly expose a compatible account-payment or funding route.
