Denmark Payment Guide

Denmark combines a highly digital card market with MobilePay, domestic instant account transfers and European euro-payment routes. MobilePay is a major Danish consumer and merchant payment service, while TIPS DKK is Danmarks Nationalbank’s settlement system for instant payments in Danish kroner. Dankort remains a Danish card route alongside Visa and Mastercard, and card-based wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely used. Denmark is also within the SEPA geographical scope for euro payments even though the domestic currency is DKK. This guide separates those layers before comparing foreign merchants, DKK/USD conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

MobilePay, TIPS DKK, Dankort and SEPA Are Different Danish Payment Layers

Start by identifying the live payment door. MobilePay can support person-to-person, store, webshop and app payments through eligible consumer and business setups. TIPS DKK is the underlying Danish-krona instant-settlement infrastructure and does not itself create a checkout button. Dankort is a card scheme requiring merchant acceptance and card authorization. SEPA is a euro-payment framework rather than a domestic DKK substitute. For foreign merchants, begin with the method the merchant actually offers: an eligible card, PayPal, wallet, explicit MobilePay integration or a regulated transfer route.

Which Danish Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?

The customer-facing method, settlement system, card network and currency are separate questions. MobilePay can initiate eligible account or merchant payments, TIPS DKK settles instant DKK payments between participants, Dankort and international cards follow card authorization paths, and SEPA handles euro account payments through participating providers.

Payment MethodCommon UseWhat Actually Controls It
MobilePayPerson payments, stores, webshops and appsThe user and merchant need eligible MobilePay setups. For merchant payments, the business agreement or checkout integration, funding source or account route, amount, customer approval and final payment state control the transaction. MobilePay says it can be used in stores, webshops and apps.
TIPS DKKSettlement of instant DKK account-to-account paymentsDanmarks Nationalbank is responsible for TIPS DKK. Instant DKK payments settle in seconds around the clock, including payments such as online/mobile-bank transfers and MobilePay. Banks and PSPs still decide which customer-facing service and accounts are eligible.
TIPS Cross CurrencyEligible instant DKK/EUR/SEK cross-currency paymentsThe DKK, EUR and SEK corridors were formally established in June 2026. A participating PSP and reachable recipient are still required, and the provider must expose the product, conversion terms and transaction state. The infrastructure does not imply that every bank customer can use every corridor.
DankortDanish in-store and online card paymentsThe merchant must accept Dankort, the exact card must be eligible, and merchant integration, authentication, amount, authorization and payment state must complete. Dankort publishes separate online merchant and security requirements.
Visa / Mastercard and other eligible cardsDomestic and foreign ecommerce, travel and subscriptionsThe merchant, exact Denmark-issued card, network acceptance, issuer, available funds or credit, online/international controls, billing profile, currency, authentication, recurring support, risk checks and final authorization.
SEPA Credit Transfer / SEPA InstantEUR account transfers through participating institutionsDenmark is in the SEPA geographical scope, but SEPA schemes are euro-payment schemes. The payer’s bank or PSP, recipient PSP, IBAN, EUR amount, scheme participation, conversion where needed and transaction state determine the actual route.
PayPalOnline checkout and supported recurring paymentsThe merchant must expose PayPal. The Denmark PayPal account, account status, selected funding source, transaction type, currency conversion, recurring agreement, payment state and refund destination then control the route.
Apple PaySupported in-store, app and web card checkoutApple lists many participating Danish banks and issuers. The exact card, merchant integration, device/browser, currency, recurring support and final issuer authorization still matter.
Google Wallet / Google PaySupported contactless, app and web payment flowsGoogle publishes a Denmark-specific supported-bank and card list. The exact bank/card, merchant integration, device, currency, recurring support and underlying issuer authorization remain separate tests.
Regulated International TransferForeign invoices, businesses and verified recipientsThe licensed provider, verified recipient, DKK funding, destination currency, live rate and fees, identity checks, recipient account, timing, transaction state, cancellation/recall and refund or return process.

Home Ground

Denmark Is Highly Digital, but the Payment Doors Still Differ

Danmarks Nationalbank reports that more than nine out of ten in-store payments in 2025 were digital, and that more than one in three physical-store payments used a mobile phone. Card-based wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are an important part of that shift, while physical cards remain widely used. MobilePay adds an account and merchant-payment layer, and Dankort remains a distinct Danish card route.

MobilePay: Consumer and Merchant Door

MobilePay supports person payments and business payments in stores, webshops and apps. A merchant needs the appropriate business solution or payment-provider integration; a consumer having the app does not make MobilePay available at every checkout.

TIPS DKK: 24/7/365 Instant Settlement

In Easter 2025, settlement of Danish-krona instant payments moved from the former Straksclearing to TIPS DKK. Danmarks Nationalbank’s 2026 infrastructure report says instant account-to-account payments, including MobilePay payments, can settle within seconds around the clock.

Dankort: Danish Card Route

Dankort supports Danish merchant card payments online and in stores through approved acceptance solutions. The merchant agreement, card, authentication and final card authorization remain separate from MobilePay or account-transfer settlement.

International Cards and Wallets

Visa and Mastercard remain important Danish payment routes, while Apple Pay and Google Pay pass eligible card credentials through supported merchant and device flows. A wallet does not replace the underlying issuer decision.

SEPA: EUR, Not a DKK Substitute

Denmark participates in the SEPA geographical area, but core SEPA transfer schemes move euro payments. A Danish-krona payer may need an EUR balance or conversion before the actual SEPA payment.

PayPal: Account and FX Layer

PayPal publishes Denmark-specific legal agreements. Check the merchant’s PayPal option, Denmark account status, funding source, currency conversion, recurring agreement, payment state and refund destination.

2026 Instant-Payment Change

DKK, EUR and SEK Now Share a Cross-Currency Instant Settlement Corridor

Danmarks Nationalbank states that TIPS cross-currency corridors between Danish kroner, euro and Swedish kronor were formally established on June 8, 2026. The service can allow an eligible payer to initiate in one supported domestic currency while the recipient receives another within seconds. It is still a provider-level route: the payer’s and recipient’s PSPs need to participate or provide a compatible customer product, and the live conversion, fees, recipient details and transaction state must be verified.

What Changes When a DKK Payment Leaves the Danish Merchant Context?

A foreign merchant or verified recipient defines the entry point. MobilePay needs an explicit merchant or provider route, except where the app is being used as a card-wallet handoff supported by the underlying card network. Dankort requires merchant acceptance. SEPA can work for a euro-denominated account route through participating institutions. International cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a regulated transfer form separate paths. Merchant country, destination currency, authentication, recurring billing, payment state and refund destination then become part of the corridor.

Same Danish Payer, New US Merchant and DKK/USD Money Trail

A payer in Denmark reaching a US merchant should start with the live US checkout. A Denmark-issued international card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay backed by an eligible card, or a regulated transfer can form the route. MobilePay should be treated as a direct merchant route only where the US merchant or its payment provider explicitly exposes a compatible MobilePay integration; a MobilePay card-wallet feature follows the underlying card network instead. Dankort requires explicit merchant acceptance. TIPS DKK, TIPS cross-currency and SEPA are settlement/account frameworks and do not by themselves create a normal US ecommerce checkout.

Start With the US Checkout

Record the payment methods the US merchant actually displays, then inspect the exact Danish card, PayPal account, wallet or transfer provider.

MobilePay / Dankort Need the Right Merchant Door

Domestic popularity does not prove US acceptance. If the US checkout does not expose a compatible MobilePay or Dankort path, follow an available international card, PayPal, wallet or regulated transfer route instead.

Trace the DKK/USD Money Trail

Freeze the US merchant’s USD price first. If checkout or a provider offers DKK, identify who converts and the displayed rate or markup. Otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final DKK posting and any separate issuer/provider charges. Refund conversion may differ later.

Straight Answers

Which Danish Payment Layer Controls the Answer?

Is MobilePay the same thing as TIPS DKK?

No. MobilePay is a customer-facing payment service. TIPS DKK is Danmarks Nationalbank’s instant-settlement infrastructure for Danish-krona account-to-account payments.

Can I use MobilePay at any foreign or US website?

No. A direct MobilePay merchant payment requires a compatible merchant or payment-provider integration. If MobilePay is being used only to present an eligible card contactlessly, the underlying card network and merchant acceptance control that transaction.

Can I use Dankort at any foreign website?

No. The merchant and its payment provider must accept Dankort. Otherwise use another method that the checkout actually supports.

Is Denmark in SEPA even though it uses DKK?

Yes. Denmark is in the SEPA geographical scope, but the SEPA credit-transfer and direct-debit schemes are euro-payment schemes. A DKK payer may therefore need a separate EUR balance or conversion step.

Can DKK now move instantly to EUR or SEK?

The TIPS cross-currency corridors among DKK, EUR and SEK were formally established in June 2026. A consumer or business still needs participating payment providers that expose a compatible product, reachable recipient and live conversion terms.
