Czech Republic Payment Map
Czech Republic Payment Guide
The Czech Republic combines Czech-koruna bank transfers through the Czech National Bank’s CERTIS system, a mature 24/7 instant-payment scheme, Pay a Contact phone-number payments, international cards, PayPal and card-based wallets. CERTIS instant payments move eligible one-off CZK transfers between participating institutions within seconds. Pay a Contact adds a phone-number lookup layer for participating banks but still results in an account payment through CERTIS. Euro transfers are a separate layer: Czechia is inside the SEPA geographical scope, while the broad mandatory timetable for receiving and sending euro instant payments at domestic banks starts in 2027 rather than September 2026. This guide separates those layers before comparing foreign merchants, CZK/USD conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

CERTIS Instant, Pay a Contact, SEPA and Cards Are Different Czech Payment Layers
Start by identifying the live payment door. CERTIS instant payments are one-off CZK account transfers available through banks and providers that have joined the instant-payment scheme. Pay a Contact lets participating-bank customers identify an eligible recipient by phone number instead of manually entering the account number. SEPA standard and, where a provider already offers it, euro instant transfers move EUR through a separate European route. Cards, PayPal and wallets follow merchant acceptance and issuer rules. A domestic Czech bank feature does not automatically become a foreign merchant checkout option.
Rail Map
Which Czech Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?
The customer-facing banking feature, recipient lookup, interbank rail, euro scheme and card network are separate questions. CERTIS handles Czech-koruna interbank settlement, its instant-payment component processes eligible instant payments, Pay a Contact maps a phone number to an account for participating banks, and international cards or wallets use their own merchant and issuer paths.
| Payment Method | Common Use | What Actually Controls It |
|---|---|---|
| CERTIS instant payment | One-off instant CZK bank transfers | The payer’s and recipient’s institutions must support the instant-payment scheme. The CNB operates the infrastructure 24/7. The scheme maximum is CZK 2.5 million per payment, while a payer’s bank may set a lower outgoing limit. Recipient details, amount, bank controls and final state still decide the specific payment. |
| Standard CERTIS credit transfer | Domestic CZK bank transfers | The payer and recipient banks/payment providers, Czech account details, amount, reference, processing priority and final reconciliation determine the route. |
| Pay a Contact | Small CZK payments using a recipient phone number | The payer’s and recipient’s banks must participate in the Pay a Contact Register, and the recipient must have paired the phone number with an account. The CNB register resolves the phone number to account details; the actual payment is then submitted to CERTIS as a credit transfer or instant payment. The CNB currently states a CZK 1 minimum and CZK 5,000 maximum for this service. |
| SEPA Credit Transfer | EUR account transfers through participating institutions | Czechia is in SEPA, although its domestic currency is CZK. The payer may need an EUR account or conversion. The payment provider, recipient IBAN, EUR amount, scheme participation, timing and reconciliation determine the route. |
| Euro instant payment | Instant EUR transfers where a Czech provider already offers the service | Some domestic institutions already offer euro instant payments, but the CNB states that broad mandatory receiving starts in January 2027 and sending in July 2027, with additional timing provisions for payments from koruna accounts. Euro instant payments are not operated by the CNB’s CERTIS instant-payment system. |
| Visa / Mastercard and other eligible cards | Domestic and foreign ecommerce, travel and subscriptions | The merchant, exact Czech-issued card, network acceptance, issuer, available funds or credit, online/international controls, billing profile, currency, authentication, recurring support, risk checks and final authorization. |
| Apple Pay | Supported in-store, app and web card checkout | Apple publishes a current Czechia list of participating banks and issuers. The exact card, merchant integration, device/browser, currency, recurring support and issuer authorization remain separate checks. |
| Google Wallet / Google Pay | Supported contactless, app and web card payment | Google publishes a Czech Republic-specific supported-bank and card list. The exact bank/card, merchant integration, device, currency, recurring support and issuer authorization remain decisive. |
| PayPal | Online checkout and supported automatic payments | The merchant must expose PayPal. The Czech PayPal account, account status, selected funding source, automatic-payment agreement, currency conversion, payment state and refund destination then control the route. |
| Regulated international transfer | Foreign invoices, businesses and verified recipients | The licensed provider, verified recipient, CZK or EUR funding, destination currency, live rate and fees, identity checks, recipient account, timing, transaction state, cancellation/recall and refund or return process. |
Instant CZK
CERTIS Instant Payments Are Established and Growing
The Czech National Bank operates the instant-payment infrastructure inside CERTIS. The service processes eligible one-off Czech-koruna transfers 24/7, including nights and weekends. Participation remains voluntary for CERTIS participants, so customer availability still depends on the bank or payment provider. CNB reported almost 41 million instant payments in April 2026 and about 43.6 million in June 2026, showing that instant transfers are a major domestic payment route rather than a niche feature.
Seconds, Not a Merchant Checkout
CERTIS instant payments are bank-account transfers. A merchant must provide an account-payment path or invoice details before this rail becomes relevant; it does not create a card-style checkout button on every website.
Participation Is Institution-Specific
A bank must be a CERTIS participant and join the instant-payment scheme to offer the service. Check both institutions and the live banking interface rather than assuming every Czech account can send every payment instantly.
Limits Can Differ
The scheme maximum is CZK 2.5 million per payment, but an outgoing bank can impose a lower customer limit. Treat the bank’s live limit and fraud controls as part of the route.
Phone-Number Layer
Pay a Contact Is a Recipient Lookup Plus a Bank Transfer
The CNB operates the Pay a Contact Register as technical infrastructure for participating CERTIS banks. A participating bank can pair a client’s Czech payment account with a phone number. When a payer enters an eligible phone number, the register returns the corresponding account number and account name, after which the payer’s bank submits a normal credit transfer or an instant payment through CERTIS. The service therefore changes how the recipient is identified; it does not replace the underlying bank-transfer rail.
| Pay a Contact Gate | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Participating banks | Participation is voluntary. Both payer access and recipient registration depend on the relevant banks offering the service. |
| Registered phone number | The recipient must have actively paired the phone number with a payment account through a participating bank. |
| Current amount range | The CNB currently specifies CZK 1 to CZK 5,000 per Pay a Contact payment. |
| Underlying transfer | After lookup, the bank sends the payment to CERTIS as a credit transfer or eligible instant payment. |
Cards and Wallets
Czech Cards Are Widely Used at Home and Abroad
CNB payment statistics show more than 3.3 billion payments in 2025 with cards issued by resident payment providers. Czech-issued cards were also used in more than 644 million transactions at non-resident acceptance devices in 2025, a useful indicator that cross-border card use is already substantial. Those market totals do not guarantee any single transaction: merchant network, exact card, issuer controls, authentication and currency still decide each payment.
Visa / Mastercard
International card networks are practical domestic and cross-border routes when the merchant and exact Czech-issued card are compatible.
Apple Pay / Google Wallet
Both publish current Czech bank/card support. Wallet eligibility and merchant support must be checked separately from the underlying issuer’s authorization decision.
PayPal
PayPal provides a separate account and merchant-checkout layer. Funding source, account status, automatic-payment agreement, FX route, transaction state and refund destination remain separate checks.
Euro Layer
SEPA Is Available, but Czech Euro Instant Payments Are Still in a Transition Window
Czechia is within the SEPA geographical scope. Standard euro transfers can therefore form a separate route through participating institutions. The CNB explicitly distinguishes its domestic CZK instant-payment infrastructure from euro instant-payment systems. In September 2026, some Czech institutions already offer euro instant payments, but the broad mandatory timetable has not yet fully arrived: the CNB points to January 2027 for receiving and July 2027 for sending, with later provisions affecting payments from koruna accounts. For current troubleshooting, verify the exact bank rather than applying the future obligation early.
Leaving Czechia
What Changes When the Merchant or Recipient Is Abroad?
A foreign merchant or verified recipient defines the entry point. CERTIS instant and Pay a Contact are Czech-koruna account routes and do not create a normal foreign ecommerce checkout. A euro-area invoice can use standard SEPA or an already-supported euro instant route. For a US or other non-euro merchant, cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a regulated international transfer become the main practical routes. Merchant country, destination currency, authentication, recurring billing, payment state and refund destination then become part of the corridor.
| Foreign Payment Job | First Route to Inspect | What Changes |
|---|---|---|
| US subscription | Merchant-listed recurring card, PayPal or wallet-backed card | Add the US billing entity, USD price, Czech-issued card/account, authentication, recurring permission, CZK/USD conversion, cancellation and refund conversion. |
| Foreign merchant with bank-transfer instructions | The exact account route supplied by the merchant/provider | Verify currency, recipient account, whether CZK CERTIS or EUR SEPA is actually relevant, amount, transaction state and reconciliation. |
| Euro-area invoice | SEPA standard or bank-supported euro instant transfer | Verify EUR funding/conversion, beneficiary IBAN/name, current bank capability, amount, reference and final state. |
| USD/non-SEPA invoice | Verified regulated international transfer | Identify recipient, CZK/USD or EUR/USD conversion, live rate/fees, account, timing, compliance, transaction state and recovery. |
Czech Republic → United States
Start With the US Checkout and Trace CZK to USD
For a normal US ecommerce purchase, start with the payment methods the US merchant actually shows. A Czech-issued international card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay backed by an eligible card, or a regulated transfer can form a practical route. CERTIS instant and Pay a Contact remain domestic CZK account tools unless a regulated provider supplies a compatible Czech funding account before onward USD delivery. SEPA can be relevant as an EUR funding leg where a provider supplies a compatible European account.
US Checkout First
Record the live card, PayPal, wallet or account methods at the US merchant rather than inferring a route from what is popular in Czechia.
CERTIS Is a Funding Layer, Not a US Checkout
A regulated provider can potentially supply a Czech account for CZK funding, but a normal US merchant is not a CERTIS recipient merely because the payer has a Czech bank account.
CZK/USD Money Trail
Freeze the merchant’s USD price. If checkout or a provider offers CZK, identify who converts and the displayed rate or markup; otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final CZK posting and later refund.
Where the Route Breaks
Find the Failed Gate Before Retrying
Card Authorization Gate
Record issuer message, amount, online/international controls, merchant category, authentication and recurring setup.
Authentication Gate
Separate authentication from final issuer or bank approval.
Cross-Border Gate
Compare Czech and merchant countries, exact card/CERTIS/SEPA route, currency, merchant integration and provider risk.
CZK Money Trail Gate
Reconcile merchant currency, conversion choice, authorization, final CZK posting, separate charges and refund conversion.
Payment State Gate
Check whether the first bank, card, PayPal, wallet or transfer attempt is successful, rejected, pending, reversed, returned or refunded before paying again.
PayPal Layer
Use the PayPal guide when the merchant does not offer PayPal, the Czech account cannot continue, funding is unavailable or currency changes the route.
Straight Answers
Which Czech Payment Layer Controls the Answer?
Are instant CZK bank transfers available in the Czech Republic?
Yes. The CNB operates CERTIS instant payments 24/7 for participating banks and payment providers. Participation is voluntary, so check the exact institution and live customer service.
What is Pay a Contact?
It is a participating-bank service that uses the CNB’s register to resolve a registered phone number to a Czech payment account. The bank then sends a credit transfer or instant payment through CERTIS.
Can Pay a Contact send money to a US merchant?
No as a general merchant route. It is a small-value CZK bank-payment service for registered participating-bank recipients, not a universal international checkout method.
Are instant euro transfers mandatory at Czech banks today?
Not yet across the whole market in September 2026. The CNB states a phased 2027 timetable for mandatory receiving and sending, although some institutions already offer euro instant payments.
Can a Czech card pay a US website?
Potentially, when the US merchant accepts the card network and the exact card/issuer allows the international online transaction. Check USD amount, issuer controls, authentication, billing profile and recurring support.
