Belgium Payment Guide

Belgium combines a strong domestic card and mobile-payment layer with euro-area bank-transfer rails and international card or wallet routes. Bancontact remains a central Belgian merchant-payment scheme, while the former Payconiq by Bancontact app was renamed Bancontact Pay in March 2026. Wero is also being deployed in Belgium for account-based payments and online checkout, with a live transition from eligible Payconiq QR codes during September 2026. SEPA credit transfers and SEPA Instant move euro account payments, while Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Wallet create separate card, account or wallet routes. This guide separates those layers before comparing foreign merchants, EUR/USD conversion, subscriptions, payment states, refunds and recovery.

Bancontact, Wero and SEPA Are Different Belgian Payment Layers

Start by identifying the live payment door. Bancontact Card or Bancontact Pay can complete Belgian merchant payments when the checkout or QR route supports them. Wero is a bank-account payment solution whose available features depend on the participating bank, merchant and current rollout. SEPA standard and instant transfers move euro account payments when the recipient provides an eligible account route. None of those domestic or European layers automatically appears at every foreign checkout, so international payments should start with the merchant or verified recipient option that is actually offered.

Which Belgian Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?

The checkout brand, account rail and final authorization are separate questions. Bancontact provides card and mobile merchant-payment products, Wero links supported bank accounts to participating payment flows, SEPA handles euro account transfers, international cards use their own networks, and PayPal or device wallets add another account or card-handoff layer.

Payment MethodCommon UseWhat Actually Controls It
Bancontact CardBelgian in-store and online card paymentsThe merchant must accept Bancontact, the exact card and issuing bank must be eligible, and the amount, authentication method, merchant integration and final transaction state must complete. Bancontact’s online flow can use card details followed by bank app, itsme or card-reader confirmation.
Bancontact PayMobile online, QR and supported person-to-person or merchant paymentsThe app, linked Bancontact card, participating bank, merchant or QR integration, user confirmation, amount and transaction state control the route. Bancontact states that the former Payconiq by Bancontact app became Bancontact Pay in March 2026.
WeroSupported bank-account payments, person payments and online checkoutThe payer needs a qualifying account at a participating bank and the merchant must offer Wero for online checkout. Feature availability varies by bank and country. Belgium is a current Wero market, but the 2026 migration from Payconiq-era QR flows is still time-sensitive.
SEPA Credit TransferEUR bank transfers within the SEPA areaThe payer and beneficiary PSPs, IBAN and recipient details, EUR amount, reference, verification controls, processing route, transaction state and reconciliation.
SEPA Instant / TIPS-supported transferInstant EUR bank transfer through participating institutionsThe National Bank of Belgium describes TIPS as a 24/7/365 settlement service based on the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer scheme. The customer-facing bank service, eligible accounts, recipient information, EUR amount and transaction state still determine whether a specific transfer can be sent instantly.
Visa / Mastercard and other eligible cardsDomestic and foreign ecommerce, travel and subscriptionsThe live merchant, exact Belgium-issued card, network acceptance, issuer, available funds or credit, online/international controls, billing profile, currency, authentication, recurring support, risk checks and authorization.
PayPalOnline checkout and supported automatic paymentsThe merchant must expose PayPal. The Belgium PayPal account, account status, selected funding source, billing agreement, transaction type, currency conversion, payment state and refund destination then control the route.
Apple PaySupported in-store, app and web card checkoutBelgium is an Apple Pay-supported market and Apple publishes participating Belgian banks. The exact card, issuer, merchant integration, device/browser, currency, recurring support and final issuer authorization still matter.
Google Wallet / Google PaySupported contactless, app and web payment flowsGoogle publishes a Belgium-specific supported-bank and card list. The exact bank/card, merchant integration, device, currency, recurring support and underlying issuer authorization remain separate tests.
Regulated International TransferNon-SEPA invoices, businesses and verified recipientsThe licensed provider, verified recipient, EUR funding, destination currency, rate and fees, identity checks, recipient account, timing, transaction state, cancellation/recall and refund or return process.

Bancontact, Wero and SEPA Solve Different Belgian Payment Jobs

Bancontact Card: Domestic Merchant Card Route

Bancontact is a Belgian card scheme used through participating merchants and issuers. Online checkout can use the card route directly when the merchant exposes Bancontact. Treat the card scheme, merchant integration, issuing bank, authentication and final payment state as separate checks.

Bancontact Pay: The 2026 Payconiq Successor Name

Bancontact announced on March 16, 2026 that the Payconiq by Bancontact app was renamed Bancontact Pay through an app update rather than a separate migration download. The consumer still needs an eligible linked Bancontact card and a supported merchant, QR or person-payment flow.

Wero: Account-Based European Payment Layer

Wero is available in Belgium through participating banks and currently supports online payments at merchants that explicitly offer Wero. During the September 2026 transition, official Wero guidance also describes migration of eligible Payconiq QR use. Check the exact bank, app, merchant and current feature before treating Wero as available.

SEPA: Standard and Instant EUR Account Rails

Belgian euro transfers sit inside the wider SEPA framework. Instant settlement infrastructure does not create a merchant checkout by itself: the bank or payment provider and recipient still need to expose an eligible account-payment route with valid recipient details.

Apple Pay / Google Wallet: Card Handoffs

Both have current Belgium-specific support. A wallet does not replace the underlying card decision. The participating bank/card, merchant integration, device, country, currency, authentication and issuer authorization still determine whether a purchase completes.

PayPal: Account and FX Layer

PayPal maintains a Belgium-specific user agreement and account offering. Check the merchant’s PayPal door, Belgium account status, selected funding source, currency conversion, automatic-payment agreement, payment state and refund destination rather than assuming every underlying card behaves the same.

2026 Transition

Do Not Treat Payconiq, Bancontact Pay and Wero as Static Names

Belgian mobile payments are in an active brand and product transition. Bancontact says the Payconiq by Bancontact consumer app became Bancontact Pay in March 2026. Wero guidance for September 2026 says the Wero app can scan eligible Payconiq QR codes during the migration period, while the old Payconiq app is scheduled to stop being available from October 1, 2026. Because rollout details can change by bank, merchant and feature, use the live app, checkout and official support page when diagnosing a current payment.

What Changes When a EUR Payment Leaves the Belgian Merchant Context?

A foreign merchant or verified recipient defines the entry point. A SEPA-area invoice can remain an account-transfer route when the recipient provides an eligible EUR account. Bancontact or Wero requires an explicit merchant or provider integration. Outside those integrations, international cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a regulated transfer form separate routes. Merchant country, destination currency, authentication, recurring billing, payment state and refund destination then become part of the corridor.

Same Belgian Payer, New US Merchant and EUR/USD Money Trail

A payer in Belgium reaching a US merchant should start with the live US checkout. A Belgium-issued international card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay backed by an eligible card, or a regulated transfer can form the route. Bancontact or Wero should be treated as available only where the US merchant or payment provider explicitly exposes a compatible integration. SEPA is a European euro account framework and does not by itself create a US ecommerce checkout.

Start With the US Checkout

Record the methods the US merchant actually shows, then inspect the exact Belgian card, account or provider. A domestic Bancontact or Wero route absent from checkout is not automatically available.

Bancontact / Wero Need Explicit Merchant Support

Bancontact and Wero can support online merchant payments, but the merchant or PSP must expose the relevant route. If a US site does not show it, follow the available card, PayPal, wallet or verified transfer path instead.

Trace the EUR/USD Money Trail

Freeze the US merchant’s USD price first. If checkout or PayPal offers EUR, identify who converts and the displayed rate or markup. Otherwise trace the USD authorization into the final EUR posting and any separate issuer/provider charges. A later refund can use a different conversion point.

Straight Answers

Which Belgian Payment Layer Controls the Answer?

Is Payconiq still the current app name in Belgium?

Bancontact announced that the Payconiq by Bancontact app became Bancontact Pay in March 2026. Some QR and merchant references can still appear during the Wero migration, so use the current app and checkout label rather than relying on an older name.

What is Bancontact Pay?

Bancontact Pay is the current consumer mobile-payment app name from Bancontact. It can link eligible Bancontact cards and support online, QR and other available payment features through participating banks and merchants.

Can I use Wero in Belgium?

Yes, Wero currently lists Belgium as a supported market. The payer still needs a qualifying account at a participating bank, and online merchants must explicitly offer Wero. Individual features vary by bank, country and rollout stage.

Does Belgium support instant euro transfers?

Belgian institutions participate in the European instant-payment environment. The National Bank of Belgium describes TIPS as a 24/7/365 settlement service based on SEPA Instant Credit Transfer. The customer bank, accounts, recipient details and selected service still determine a specific transfer.

Can Bancontact or Wero pay any US website?

No. The US merchant or its payment provider must explicitly expose a compatible Bancontact or Wero route. Otherwise use a method that the checkout actually offers.

How Current Is the Belgium Payment Map?

We last checked this Belgium payment map on September 3, 2026. Bancontact Pay naming and features, the Payconiq-to-Wero QR transition, Wero bank and merchant rollout, SEPA instant-payment implementation, card/wallet support, PayPal terms, currencies, authentication, recurring billing, payment states, fees, refunds and recovery procedures can change. The Payconiq app transition has a near-term October 2026 milestone, so this page should be reviewed again in early October rather than waiting for a normal quarterly cycle.

What We Checked: Belgium Payment Rails

We reviewed Bancontact, Wero, the National Bank of Belgium, PayPal, Apple and Google materials on September 3, 2026. The official sources distinguish Bancontact card/mobile merchant payments, the 2026 Payconiq naming transition, Wero account and online-payment rollout, SEPA instant infrastructure, card checkout, PayPal and wallet layers. None guarantees that a specific foreign merchant, bank account, card, currency, subscription or refund route will be eligible.
