Bangladesh Payment Guide

Bangladesh payments use several different layers that should not be treated as interchangeable. The National Payment Switch Bangladesh (NPSB) connects participating banks for card, ATM, POS and interbank electronic transactions. Bangla QR is the national interoperable QR standard for retail merchant payments. TakaPay is Bangladesh’s national card scheme and routes through NPSB. BEFTN and BD-RTGS provide separate bank-transfer rails. Mobile financial services such as bKash add wallet, merchant, send-money, cash-out and remittance-receipt routes. A cross-border transfer still requires a provider that explicitly connects the sending country to a Bangladesh bank, cash or wallet payout.

Start With the Payment Layer, Not Just the App or Card Name

For a domestic merchant, first identify whether the checkout is Bangla QR, a card route, bKash, bank transfer or another provider-specific flow. For domestic bank transfers, identify NPSB IBFT, BEFTN or RTGS rather than treating every transfer as the same rail. For money arriving from abroad, verify the cross-border provider and recipient method separately; a domestic Bangladesh rail does not by itself prove that a foreign sender can reach it.

Which Bangladesh Payment Layer Is Actually Moving the Money?

LayerCommon UseWhat Actually Controls It
NPSBInterbank ATM, POS, internet-banking transfers and connected retail-payment servicesParticipating institution, account or card, transaction type, amount, authentication, current NPSB rules, institutional limits and final transaction state. Bangladesh Bank requires two-factor authentication for applicable online, ecommerce, interbank and card-not-present transactions.
Bangla QRInteroperable merchant QR paymentThe participating bank, mobile financial service, PSP or other certified institution, merchant onboarding, customer account or card, BDT amount, authentication, MDR or fee rules and transaction state. Bangla QR is the national interoperable QR standard; it is not proof that every app or merchant is connected.
TakaPayBangladesh national card scheme for ATM, POS, QR and related electronic transactionsThe issuing bank, exact TakaPay product, merchant or ATM acceptance, available balance, authentication, NPSB routing, limits and authorization. TakaPay is primarily a domestic scheme; foreign acceptance should not be assumed without a separately supported international route.
BEFTNInterbank electronic fund transfer and batch paymentsOriginating and receiving bank, account details, processing schedule, payment purpose, amount, return conditions and banking-day timing.
BD-RTGSHigh-value and time-critical interbank settlementParticipating bank, minimum or eligible transaction amount, account details, currency, operating hours, fee and settlement state. It is a bank-settlement route rather than a consumer wallet.
bKashWallet send money, merchant payment, QR payment, cash out, bank transfer, bills and inbound remittance receiptThe registered bKash account, verification status, balance, transaction type, mobile number or merchant, current limits and fees, authentication and final wallet state. bKash’s domestic wallet services and its remittance-receipt routes are separate jobs.
International Visa / Mastercard or regulated transfer providerForeign merchant checkout or cross-border recipient transferThe exact merchant or provider, Bangladesh-issued product, international controls, sending and receiving country, currencies, identity checks, fees, exchange rate, authentication, payment state and refund or return path.

NPSB, Bangla QR, TakaPay and bKash Solve Different Jobs

NPSB: Interoperability Layer

Bangladesh Bank describes NPSB as the switch used to establish interoperability among participating banks for account and card transactions. Diagnose the exact ATM, POS, IBFT, Bangla QR or other certified route rather than assuming all NPSB-connected services share the same limits or dispute process.

Bangla QR: National Merchant QR

Bangladesh Bank created Bangla QR as an open-loop interoperable merchant-presented QR standard. In 2026 the central bank continued expanding the scheme and directed replacement of proprietary QR at merchant points with Bangla QR. The payer still needs a participating institution and the merchant must be properly onboarded.

TakaPay: National Card Scheme

Bangladesh Bank launched TakaPay as the national card scheme, with transactions routed through NPSB. The scheme supports ATM, POS, QR and fund-transfer use cases through participating issuers. Treat foreign use as a separate question unless the exact product and international route are explicitly supported.

bKash: Wallet and Merchant Layer

bKash currently offers Send Money, merchant Payment, QR payments, Cash Out, Add Money, bank transfer, bills and inbound remittance receipt. The registered account, transaction type, limits, fees and recipient or merchant determine the route.

BEFTN vs RTGS

BEFTN is an electronic fund-transfer network used for interbank payments and batch-style processing. BD-RTGS is designed for higher-value and time-critical settlement. Use the rail actually selected by the bank rather than treating every bank transfer as instant.

2FA and Final Authorization

Bangladesh Bank requires participating banks to use two-factor authentication for applicable online, ecommerce, interbank and card-not-present transactions. A successful OTP or challenge proves authentication, not necessarily final payment approval.

Going Cross-Border

Domestic Bangladesh Reach Does Not Automatically Become an International Route

A Bangla QR code, TakaPay card, bKash wallet or NPSB transfer can work well inside Bangladesh and still be absent from a foreign merchant or sender’s payment flow. For overseas merchant checkout, inspect the live foreign checkout and the exact Bangladesh-issued card or wallet route. For remittance, use a regulated provider that explicitly supports Bangladesh and the intended bank, cash or wallet payout.

Cross-Border JobFirst Route to InspectWhat Changes
Foreign ecommerce or subscriptionThe international card, PayPal or wallet route actually exposed by the merchantAdd merchant country, billing currency, Bangladesh-issued product, international controls, authentication, recurring terms, issuer approval, BDT conversion and refund path.
Inbound remittanceA provider explicitly supporting Bangladesh and the selected payout methodConfirm sending country, sender eligibility, BDT payout, recipient bank or cash details, wallet eligibility where used, live fee and FX rate, timing, compliance checks and transfer state.
Outbound bank transferA licensed bank or regulated transfer providerConfirm purpose, regulatory requirements, recipient country, currencies, account details, fees, exchange rate, documentary requirements and return or recall process.

For money coming from the United Arab Emirates, the dedicated corridor separates UAE funding, Bangladesh destination availability, conditional bank and cash payout, conditional bKash receipt, AED/BDT conversion, fees, timing, transfer states and recovery. Use that route instead of assuming a domestic Bangladesh payment layer describes the entire cross-border transfer.

What is Bangla QR?

Bangla QR is Bangladesh’s national interoperable merchant QR standard. A customer uses a participating institution’s app or payment solution to scan a merchant-presented Bangla QR code.

What is TakaPay?

What We Checked: Bangladesh Payment Rails

We reviewed current Bangladesh Bank and bKash materials on September 15, 2026. The official sources distinguish NPSB interbank and card interoperability, Bangla QR merchant payments, TakaPay national card routing, BEFTN and RTGS bank-transfer rails, and bKash wallet and merchant services. Domestic availability does not by itself prove that a foreign merchant or sender supports the same route.
